What is going wrong with the Mumbai Indians and can they still make the playoffs?

The Mumbai Indians are one of those teams that are always judged by the highest standards. That comes with winning multiple IPL titles and building a big reputation. But so far, the 2026 season has not looked like a typical Mumbai campaign. After winning their opening game for the first time since 2012, MI have won just one match in their last six matches. Because of that, they’re eighth in the 10-team table. For a franchise with this much experience and quality, that is a serious warning sign. With attention around their results continuing to build, it is also important to keep responsible gambling in mind.

The most frustrating part is that the players are talented, but they’re struggling to function properly as a team. There have been moments of quality, but not enough control, not enough consistency, and not enough pressure on opponents when it’s necessary. Reuters also reported that captain Hardik Pandya has already admitted the side needs a major rethink, which tells you that they are also concerned.

The Bowling unit is not creating enough pressure

The clearest problem is the bowling. MI’s defeat against the Punjab Kings showed exactly why fans are worried. Mumbai posted 195/6, powered by Quinton de Kock’s unbeaten 112 off 60 balls, which should have given them a strong chance. Instead, Punjab chased 196 in just 16.3 overs. Prabhsimran Singh finished unbeaten on 80, Shreyas Iyer made 66 off 35, and MI never looked in control for long enough.

Jasprit Bumrah is the centre of attention, but the bigger issue is what happens around him. Bumrah had streak of five matches without a wicket, yet head coach Mahela Jayawardene defended him and said opponents are simply playing him carefully before attacking the rest of the bowling attack. Jayawardene also admitted Mumbai has not put enough pressure on teams in the power play and has lacked penetration as a bowling unit. That feels like the heart of the problem. One elite bowler can keep things respectable, but he cannot do everything alone.

The batting still feels patchy

The batting is not completely broken, but it has not looked settled either. De Kock’s hundred against the Punjab Kings was outstanding, yet one brilliant innings only highlighted a larger issue: MI have depended too much on individual efforts instead of collective batting control. Even before the Punjab loss, Pandya had said the team needed to rethink both batting and bowling and improve its momentum in the powerplay. Mumbai has struggled to generate momentum, and its batting unit has added pressure to itself by not clicking consistently.

That is what makes MI frustrating to watch right now. On paper, the batting order still looks dangerous. In reality, it has not regularly put together the kind of complete performance needed to cover for a shaky bowling attack. When one department is already underperforming, the other has to be sharper. Mumbai has not managed that balance yet.

Tactical uncertainty is making things worse

When results go bad, every selection call starts to look bigger. That is where MI is now. Pandya has openly said the team may need to make some difficult decisions, while his earlier comments suggested the management could look at other options with both bat and ball. That usually means the current combination is not giving the side enough confidence.

There is also a mental side to this. Losing four in a row changes the mood around a team. Players start forcing things, captains start chasing answers quickly, and mistakes become harder to ignore. Jayawardene said Mumbai is showing “sparks” in some areas, but other teams are simply being more clinical. That is a fair summary of MI’s season so far.

Can the Mumbai Indians still make the playoffs?

Yes, they still can, but the room for error is shrinking fast. They are not out of the race, and the season is not at a stage where recovery is impossible. But this has to improve quickly. A team sitting eight after just one win in the last six matches cannot keep waiting for form to return on its own.

For the Mumbai Indians to stay alive in the playoff race, three things need to happen immediately. First, the bowling around Bumrah has to offer far more control. Second, the batting has to produce complete team performances instead of isolated rescue acts. Third, MI needs a more settled combination so that every match does not feel like another experiment. The squad is still strong enough to fight back, but reputation alone will not save them. Right now, the Mumbai Indians look like a talented team searching for structure. Unless they find it soon, this season could slip away much earlier than their fans expected.
