Axar Patel-led were handed their first defeat of the season on Sunday.

Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Axar Patel is the latest skipper in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 to be fined for a slow overrate offense. He suffered this fate in his team’s match against Mumbai Indians (MI) on April 14, which was played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

At their home stadium, Arun Jaitley Stadium, DC’s dominance came to an end on Sunday when MI defeated them by a slim margin of 12 runs, giving the Axar Patel-led team their first defeat of the current IPL 2025 season.

After winning each of their first four games this season, the revamped Delhi team swept to the top of the points standings. Delhi dropped to second place on Sunday, though, when Mumbai gave them a reality check.

After winning the toss, DC decided to bowl first. In 20 overs, MI was able to reach 205/5. With a score of 59, Tilak Varma led the field, followed by Ryan Rickelton (41), Suryakumar Yadav (40), and Naman Dhir (38*).

Karun Nair dominated the DC innings in retaliation. Nair hit 89 runs in 40 balls, with 12 fours and five sixes, in his first IPL game since 2020. Together with Abishek Porel, for the second wicket, he also contributed 119 runs.

Vipraj Nigam (14) and Ashutosh Sharma (17) attempted to keep the run chase on track, but they were bowled out for 193 runs in three deliveries of the 19th over, losing the match by 12 runs.

Axar Patel fined INR 12 lakhs for DC’s slow overrate

Along with the defeat, Axar was also disciplined by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for violating the IPL code of conduct during the match. In the IPL 2025 match against MI in Delhi, Axar’s team maintained a slow over-rate, which resulted in a fine.

“As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Patel was fined INR 12 lakhs,” the IPL media release read.

Despite having three spin bowlers in their arsenal, the Capitals were surprisingly unable to finish their entire quota of overs in the allocated time. This is the reason that after DC’s season-opening loss, Axar received a hefty fine.
