Dewald Brevis has previously played 10 games in IPL for the Mumbai Indians.

Dewald Brevis, the South African batting sensation, has been signed by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the rest of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. He replaced pacer Gurjapneet Singh, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the season.

Since their squad still had one overseas spot available, they were allowed to sign the South African as a replacement. CSK paid INR 2.2 crores for Brevis, despite the fact that his base price at the mega auction was only INR 75 lakhs.

Famously known as “Baby AB,” Dewald Brevis was released by the Mumbai Indians and failed to earn bids at the IPL 2025 mega auction. He has played for the MI New York, St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots, and New York Strikers, among other T20 leagues. Brevis will contribute significantly to the franchise.

Dewald Brevis first made news at the 2022 ICC Men’s U19 World Cup, when he scored 506 runs in just six innings, including two centuries and three half-centuries. His amazing performances rapidly gained international recognition.

Dewald Brevis officially joins the CSK franchise for IPL 2025.

The five-time champions have made a huge move by signing one of the top young players in cricket. Although Brevis has only played a few games for South Africa, he was already well-known a few years ago after being compared to the great AB de Villiers.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed South Africa’s Dewald Brevis as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh for the remainder of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Dewald Brevis has played 81 T20s and scored 1787 runs with a highest score of 162. He made his T20I debut for South Africa in 2023 and has played 2 T20Is so far. Brevis was previously part of Mumbai Indians (MI), where he played 10 matches. He will join CSK for INR 2.2 crore,” the IPL statement read.

He has already participated in ten IPL games for MI and still plays for them in the MLC and SA20. With a strike rate of around 145, the 21-year-old has already participated in 81 Twenty20 matches.

Brevis performed well during the 2025 SA20 season. Brevis had the greatest strike rate of 184.17 among the top 10 run-getters in the competition.

Chennai Super Kings welcome Dewald Brevis into the CSK fold.

The 21-year-old hitter has participated in 81 T20 matches thus far, amassing 1787 runs at an average of 26.27 and a strike rate of 144.93.

Brevis is CSK’s second substitute player this season. The team has already signed Ayush Mhatre, a Mumbai sensation, to take the position of regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.

CSK had also announced Dewald Brevis’ arrival in the CSK camp on social media. They posted on X: “Bringing a whole lot of Protea Firepower!”
