MS Dhoni is one of the few players who have played in every IPL season since 2008.
In the 17th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are currently playing the Delhi Capitals (DC). Rumor has it that MS Dhoni, the franchise’s legend, may be playing his final game.
A player like MS Dhoni can make enormous ripples with even the smallest movements. The focus of news articles is always a man who has a billion fans spread out over the nation.
Despite his reserved nature, Dhoni is exposed to the public through the IPL windows. The retirement rumors frequently intensify suddenly since the former India captain is in the latter stage of his career and most likely beyond.
MS Dhoni’s numbers in the IPL reflect not just longevity but sustained consistency. In 267 IPL matches, Dhoni has amassed 5,289 runs at a strike rate of 137.70. For CSK alone, he’s featured in 237 games, scoring 4,715 runs at an average touching 40.30—remarkable for someone who often bats lower down the order.

These discussions have been triggered by the presence of MS Dhoni’s family members at the game. However, if we look at the management’s choices, there have been hints that the game against DC may be MS Dhoni’s final time playing cricket himself.
Due to the presence of Dhoni’s parents at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday, April 5, during the ongoing CSK vs. DC game, rumors about his retirement have intensified. The fact that the veteran’s father and mother were spotted at the game fueled concerns about whether MS Dhoni will be retiring at the halfway point of the season.
Moreover, Dhoni’s wife, Sakshi, and daughter, Ziva, are also at the stadium supporting MS Dhoni. This was evident as the CSK shared a post on X with photos of Dhoni’s parents, Sakshi and Ziva, on social media.
MS Dhoni has largely kept his family life secret throughout the years. Particularly during IPL matches, his parents have hardly ever been spotted in stadiums. Thus, it felt important when the camera panned at them.
Dhoni has disregarded timetables over the years. First, by staying active well after his 2020 international retirement. In 2023, he led CSK to yet another IPL championship. But since then, every season has felt like a gift for supporters nationwide, who swarm stadiums to catch a glimpse of the adored former Indian captain who guided the team to dominance in all three formats throughout the world.
