The Gujarat Titans won the IPL in 2022, their debut year itself.

The Gujarat Titans (GT) received new owners ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. GT are based out of Ahmedabad and have the Narendra Modi Stadium in the city as their home ground. The franchise was one of the two new teams, along with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), to come into existence in 2022.

The BCCI had sent out tenders for two new teams in 2021, ahead of the IPL 2022 season. Several entities bid for the ownership of the new teams, and CVC Capitals won the rights to operate the Ahmedabad franchise with a bid of ₹5,625 crores.

Hardik Pandya was roped in by the franchise in pre-season draft and was named captain of the team, and GT won IPL 2022 and reached the final of IPL 2023 as well.

Who are the new owners of the Gujarat Titans (GT) franchise?

Ahead of the IPL 2025 tournament, rumors began that CVC Capitals was looking to sell the GT franchise. Rumors were confirmed when Torrent Group came on board and agreed with CVC Capital for the sale of 67% of the GT franchise ownership.

In October 2021, CVC Capital acquired the Ahmedabad-based IPL franchise for almost INR 5,625 crores. This was the first time an Indian sports franchise was purchased by a major PE group. CVC has invested in a number of sports around the world, including the Spanish football competition, La Liga. 

The transaction’s financial details were not made public. According to media sources earlier in the day, CVC would have the option to sell its remaining ownership at a later date, and the deal might be for INR 7,500 crores ($866 million at current currency rates).

Who are Torrent Group, the new owners of Gujarat Titans?

Torrent Group is one of the largest conglomerates in India with revenues of over INR 41,000 crores. It has a strong presence in the sectors of pharmaceuticals, power generation, transmission and distribution, and city gas distribution (CGD).

Irelia Company Pvt Ltd (“Irelia”), which is currently entirely owned by funds managed or advised by CVC, has agreed in writing to sell the majority stake of 67% in the renowned IPL team GT to Torrent Investments Private Limited (TIPL).

Irelia will keep a sizeable minority share of 33% in the franchise as part of the agreement. This is the first time a prominent private equity firm and one of India’s top business groups have partnered strategically in the country’s sports industry.
