IPL 2025: MS Dhoni becomes fourth Indian cricketer to play 400 T20 matches

MS Dhoni has been an active T20 cricketer since 2006.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are locking horns in the 43rd match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Friday, April 25. Former Indian wicket-keeper MS Dhoni captured another memorable record in his name during the encounter. The CSK skipper has become only fourth Indian cricketer to play 400 T20 matches.
During his journey of 400 T20I games, Dhoni has represented four teams- Indian Cricket Team, CSK, Jharkhand, and Rising Pune Supergiants. He has played 267 games for CSK including the ongoing CSK vs SRH game. He has been part of the side since 2008. He has featured for the side in all seasons barring a couple of seasons where the team was suspended.
The wicket-keeper batter also played 30 matches for now-defunct RPS in the 2016 and 2017 IPL seasons, when CSK were banned from participating in the tournament. He represented Indian Team in 99 T20Is and also played four games for his domestic team Jharkhand in 2007.
MS Dhoni joins Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Dinesh Karthik in the 400 T20s club
Notably, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Dinesh Karthik and MS Dhoni are the only other Indian players to feature in 400 T20s. Among them, Sharma is the leading member and the only one to play more than 450 games. Notably, Sharma, Kohli, and Dhoni have retired from T20Is, but are active in the IPL. Karthik has retired from all forms of cricket and is RCB’s mentor in IPL 2025.
Indian cricketers with most T20 matches
- Rohit Sharma – 456
- Dinesh Karthik – 412
- Virat Kohli – 408
- MS Dhoni – 400
Dhoni accounts for more than 7500 runs in 400 T20 games with a top knock of unbeaten 84 and 28 half-centuries. The 43-year-old has shown a good batting form in IPL 2025. He has mustered 134 runs across eight games with four unbeaten innings. He has a strike rate of 152.27. However, CSK have struggled to come up with a powerful start in the season.
Dhoni-led CSK have shown poor form in IPL 2025. The five-time champions have won just two games out of eight and lost six matches. They will aim for their third victory of the season against SRH in the ongoing clash. The match takes place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
