Sanju Samson was batting on 31 when the injury occurred.
On Wednesday (April 16), Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson retired injured against the Delhi Capitals (DC) in match No. 32 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. He scored 31 runs off 19 balls, including two fours and three sixes. RR were 61/0 when their captain walked off the field.
Earlier today, DC batted first after RR’s Sanju Samson won the toss and chose to bowl first. Abishek Porel’s 49 and other contributions from KL Rahul (38), Tristan Stubbs (34*), and Axar Patel (34) took DC to 188/5 in 20 overs. For RR, Jofra Archer took 2/32.
The event occurred in the sixth over of the RR innings as he was facing leg-spinner Vipraj Nigam. On the third ball of the over, the DC spinner produced a faster googly that landed well outside off stump.
Sanju attempted to slash but could not make contact with the ball. In the process, he injured himself. Soon after missing the shot, Sanju appeared to be in discomfort, stretching his left arm as if he had sustained a side injury.
Sanju Samson tries to continue after treatment but decides to retire hurt due to pain
To tend to the right-handed batsman, the physio rushed onto the field. Before practicing his bat swing, Sanju Samson was observed taking a medication to make sure he was well enough to continue. RR were relieved when their captain chose to go on, but the joy was fleeting.
He chose not to take a single despite hitting the over’s following ball into long off. Samson chose to leave the field after glancing in agony once more.
After adding 61 for the first wicket with Yashasvi Jaiswal in 5.3 overs, Samson was on 31 off 19 balls when he was hurt. If RR need him again during the pursuit, it is unclear if he will eventually make a comeback.
With four points, RR are presently tied for eighth place in the standings with the Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Prior to the encounter against DC, they had lost their fifth and sixth games of the season after winning the next two.
RR are fervently hoping that their skipper will be able to play in the forthcoming games and that the injury is not too serious. Due to an injury, Samson only appeared as a batsman in the first three games of the current season.
