Four IPL teams made their way into the top 5 of the list.
If we say, the Indian Premier League is the most popular in South Asia, it won’t be an overstatement. The IPL’s popularity is among the top in the world as well. IPL has become a most lucrative business league along with the quality of cricket fans get to watch in this two-month-long tournament. Twitter always stays abuzz during an IPL game, and new stars are made with social media power. IPL teams' fan following is not just restricted to India, but also around the world. If we talk about South Asia, their following reaches the next level. They leave all the other sports and teams behind.
IPL teams leave everyone behind
In terms of viewership also, IPL gets massive traction around the region, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, and Bhutan the market is bigger than other sports for Cricket in these countries. In a study done on teams following on social media, IPL teams have left behind others including Cristiano Ronado’s football club Al Nassr. Millions followed IPL teams in April. Chennai Super Kings with 9.97 million users is top of the independent study done on Twitter. They have got a huge following due to MS Dhoni’s popularity among the Cricket fans. Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore is 2nd with 4.85 million users in April. These two have got two of the biggest stars in their respective teams.
IPL trumps Cristiano Ronaldo's popularity
Even Rajasthan Royals have earned a huge fan base in recent years. They played in the final of the IPL 2022, and since then their fanbase looked to grow rapidly. Rajasthan Royals have left behind Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr football club. RR have got 3.55 million tractions from Twitter users while Al-Nassr is 4th with 3.50 million. Along with Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians are the most popular franchise in the league. Mumbai Indians are also the most successful club with 5 IPL titles. They got a huge 2.31 million user traction in April.
The IPL 2023 is almost at the business end. Teams are rallying for the top 4 places. Defending champions Gujarat Titans have already made it to the playoffs and they also secured that they will end in one of the top 2 positions. Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are two other teams fighting hard for the top places. There’s also a fight among Rajasthan, Lucknow, Punjab, and Bangalore for the playoff race. IPL 2023 final is scheduled on 28th May at Narendra Modi cricket stadium in Ahmedabad.
