Shreyas Iyer got out for one run in the IPL 2025 final.
Former India cricketer Yograj Singh has lashed out at Shreyas Iyer for his poor shot that led to his dismissal in the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the final by six runs to lift their first title.
PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to bowl first in the match. They restricted RCB to 190/9 in the first innings with brilliant teamwork in bowling. However, they fell six runs short during the chase, ending with 184/7 till the final delivery. Iyer flopped with the bat in the crucial clash, getting out for just one run off two balls.
Notably, it was a big turning point in the IPL 2025 final. Iyer came to bat at the number four slot in the ninth over. When he arrived at the crease, PBKS were at 72/2 in 8.3 overs. However, his quick dismissal in the next over came as a big blow to the batting, as they lost their momentum by losing two wickets quickly.
Yograj Singh labels Shreyas Iyer’s shot in IPL 2025 final as “criminal offence”
Former India cricketer Yograj Singh has labelled Iyer’s shot that led to his dismissal as a criminal offence. The PBKS skipper tried to send Romario Shepherd’s off-length delivery towards the third man. However, he got a thin edge and was caught by wicket-keeper Jitesh Sharma.
“The shot which Shreyas Iyer played in the final was a criminal offence, according to me. Ashok Mankad told me about this criminal offence, which comes under Section 302. He also told me that the repercussions of this is that you will be banned for two matches. What Shreyas did yesterday is not acceptable. There is no apology for that,” Singh was quoted as saying by ANI.
Interestingly, in the Qualifier 2 match against Mumbai Indians (MI), Iyer hammered unbeaten 87 runs to drive the team to victory in the chase of over 200 runs. The encounter also took place at the Narendra Modi International Cricket Stadium. However, the PBKS skipper failed to replicate his heroics in the final.
Meanwhile, Iyer did a brilliant job as the new skipper of the side. PBKS reached the playoffs and the final for the first time after 11 years. They last reached the playoffs in the 2014 edition, where they also ended up as runners-up.
Hitting 604 runs in 17 games with six half-centuries, Iyer ended as the sixth-highest run-scorer in IPL 2025. He was the leading run-scorer for his team and held an outstanding batting average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 175.07.
