Ireland defeated Afghanistan by 6 wickets in the one-off test played at the Tolerance Oval, Abu Dhabi.

Mark Adair’s brilliant spell of pace bowling helped Ireland create history in test cricket. Ireland have defeated Afghanistan by six wickets in the only test match played at Tolerance Oval in Abu Dhabi to register their first ever win in the longest format of the game. Mark Adair bowled a magnificent spell in both innings of the test match. Adair picked up a five-wicket haul in the first innings to help his side restrict Afghanistan for just 155 runs.

Afghanistan batting was extremely poor throughout the game as they struggled to pile up runs in Abu Dhabi. Seven batters failed to cross the single digit score in the first innings. Ireland chased down 111 runs in fourth innings with captain Andy Balbirnie scoring a match-winning half-century. He scored 58 runs off 96 balls. Ireland became 12th international team to win a test match.

Ireland’s first ever test win

Ireland played their first ever test match against Pakistan at Malahide in 2018. Ireland took eight matches to register their first ever win in test cricket history. Afghanistan also received test status along with Ireland in 2017, but they have already won three games in nine matches they’ve played so far. Afghanistan took only two matches to register their first test win. Afghanistan registered their first ever test in 2019.

Talking about the recent match, Afghanistan posted only 155 runs in the first innings, in response Ireland scored 263 runs and took a lead of 108 runs in the first innings. Paul Stirling was Ireland’s leading run-scorer with a fifty. Stirling scored 52 runs in 89 balls. Curtis Campher (49) and wicket-keeper Lorcan Tucker (46) also contributed immensely to the Irish total at Tolerance Oval in Abu Dhabi.

In the second innings, Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (55) and wicket-keeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz (46) put up a little fight which helped helped Afghanistan score 218 runs. Mark Adair picked up three wickets in the second innings. Afghanistan did have a great start in the fourth innings and dismissed four Irish batters under 50, but the score was too less for Afghanistan to defend.
