Under Virat Kohli's leadership India registered their first ever test series win in Australia.

When Virat Kohli took over the Indian team’s leadership there were many expectations from him. He failed to deliver on the big stages and the Indian team lost all the ICC events that were played under his leadership. Though India made huge gains in test cricket. They became a powerhouse and won the Australian tour twice and challenged multiple teams in their backyard. As MS Dhoni passed the baton to him, there were expectations of delivering in the big events. But the team’s failure also put question marks on Virat as Captain. Virat Kohli won the Under 19 World Cup in Malaysia and this is his only trophy in his cabinet which he won as a leader of the team. In an interview now he accepted that he made mistakes as captain.

Virat Kohli accepts he made mistakes as captain

Former Indian team captain Virat Kohli said, “I have no shame in accepting that I have made many mistakes when I was captain. But the one thing I know for sure is that I never did anything for my own selfish motives. My only goal was to take the team forward, failures will keep happening but intent was never in the wrong place”. Virat Kohli became Test captain of the Indian team during India’s tour of Australia in 2014 when MS Dhoni decided to announce retirement in mid-tour. After a year, he got the responsibility of limited overs side.

Under his leadership, India played in the 2017 Champions Trophy, where they lost to Pakistan in the finals. Virat Kohli’s decision after the toss came under question. India lost to New Zealand in the ICC World Cup 2019 semifinals. Team India’s selection and strategy in that game were questioned. Then they lost two back-to-back big events in the year 2021. India once again lost to New Zealand in the WTC final and then could not even qualify for the semi-finals of T20 World Cup 2021, and were knocked out from the group stage after facing defeats in hands of Pakistan and New Zealand.
