Jasprit Bumrah picked up 71 test wickets in 2024.
Jasprit Bumrah stands tall as one of India’s greatest fast bowlers. Making his test debut in 2018, Bumrah has been instrumental for India in the other two formats of the game as well.
The 31-year-old fast bowler currently leads the wicket-takers’ chart in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 with 30 wickets at an average of 12.
Bumrah has single-handedly kept India alive in the series. While Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, and Harshit Rana have shown promise, none have caused the same havoc in the Australian dressing room as Bumrah.
Bumrah also finished as the leading wicket taker in test cricket in 2024 with 71 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 14.92. His excellence goes beyond red-ball cricket, as he delivered a match-winning performance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 final, helping India secure their second title.
The Indian vice-captain has now achieved another landmark to cap off a historic year.
Jasprit Bumrah overtakes Ravi Ashwin to become India’s highest ranked test bowler
Bumrah’s outstanding performances in 2024 helped him attain 907 rating points in the ICC test bowling rankings, to solidify his position at the top spot in the rankings.
With this, Jasprit has surpassed Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin‘s record of highest rating points attained in ICC test bowling rankings. Ashwin earned 904 rating points in 2016. That year, Ashwin was India’s standout performer, taking 72 wickets in 12 matches. Ashwin’s heroics earned him ICC Cricketer of the Year 2016.
The Indian pacer is also close to breaking another record. He needs six wickets in the fifth and final test in Sydney to set the record for most wickets by an Indian bowler in a test series. Furthermore, he has also been shortlisted for for the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year 2024 award.
India will play Australia in the fifth test of the BGT 2024-25 in Sydney starting January 3. The visitors are trailing the series 1-2 and need a win in the final test to retain the trophy.
