Jasprit Bumrah had referred to South African captain Temba Bavuma as “Bauna” in the first innings.

India pacer Jasprit Bumrah and South Africa captain Temba Bavuma shared a hearty moment after the visitors defeated the hosts in the first test by 30 runs. This match was played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata and ended on day three.

In South Africa’s second innings, Bavuma hit an undefeated 55, and Corbin Bosch contributed 25 to help the visitors reach 153. To get off to a winning start in the series, India needed 124. But Shubman Gill’s home squad faltered in the chase and was bowled for just 93 in the last innings.

After left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj claimed two wickets, South Africa won by a thrilling 30 runs. Aiden Markram made a low catch when Mohammed Siraj edged a spinning delivery to slip, resulting in the final dismissal.

In South Africa’s first innings’ 13th over, Bumrah struck Bavuma on the pads, and though the on-field umpire gave him not out, the India pacer discussed with Rishabh Pant about taking a DRS review. Both were heard on the stump mic calling Bavuma “Bauna,” or someone of short height, before deciding against taking the DRS.

Jasprit Bumrah seemingly apologizes to Temba Bavuma for the “Bauna” remark

As India’s last wicket fell and South Africans celebrated their first test win in India since 2010, they took a 1-0 lead in the two-match test series. With 10 victories in 11 test matches, Temba Bavuma maintained his stellar record as captain.

Players from both teams shook hands after the last wicket, and Jasprit Bumrah and Bavuma had a tender moment. Following Bumrah’s earlier “bauna” comment regarding the South African captain, the event gained notice.

Bumrah put his hand on Bavuma’s shoulder, and both had some words before parting ways.

Simon Harmer, who has played only 13 tests despite making his debut in 2015, earned Player of the Match award for taking four wickets in each innings, finishing with figures of 4/30 and 4/21.

Axar Patel made 26, choosing to launch a counteroffensive, drawing India nearer to the objective. Keshav Maharaj took two wickets in two deliveries to end the match.
