Jasprit Bumrah took a fifer in the ongoing second test against South Africa in Cape Town.

Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah has equalled a 23-year-old record held by Javagal Srinath for most five-wicket hauls by an Indian pacer in South Africa in test cricket. He achieved the feat on day two of the ongoing second test match against South Africa in Cape Town.

In the ongoing second test match, bowlers have ruled the roost as South Africa were bowled out for 55 runs in their first innings after South Africa captain Dean Elgar had won the toss and opted to bat first. Mohammed Siraj ran through Proteas batting line-up with his career-best best figures of 6/15. Jasprit Bumrah and Mukesh Kumar had also taken two wickets each.

India started poorly as well, with Yashasvi Jaiswal falling for a duck. But Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill scored 39 and 36 respectively to lay a good foundation. Virat Kohli then took the score upto 153/4 with a brilliant knock of 46. But then Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada removed the last six Indian wickets without scoring any run, folding the visitors for 153.

Jasprit Bumrah rattles South Africa’s batting line-up in second innings

In the second innings, South African openers started confidently, adding 37 runs for the first wicket. But Dean Elgar fell for 12 runs in his final innings of his test career.

Mukesh Kumar was the destroyer at the start, removing Elgar and Tony de Zorzi for cheap, but then Jasprit Bumrah took over. He then ran through the middle-order single-handedly. He dismissed Tristan Stubbs for 1 on day one itself.

Then on day two, he got rid of David Bedingham for 11, Kyle Verreynne fell for 9 and Marco Jansen was dismissed for 11 runs. Bumrah also got rid of Keshav Maharaj for 3 runs to complete a brilliant five-wicket haul.

With this fifer, Bumrah also equalled the record for most fifers in South Africa in test cricket by an Indian pacer, as this was his third five-wicket haul in South African soil. He equalled the record of Javagal Srinath, who also took three fifers in South Africa in tests, with his best figures being 6/76.

Overall Srinath took 43 wickets in 8 Tests in South Africa, while Bumrah has 37 wickets in 8 Tests.
