Jasprit Bumrah will captain India in the first test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Perth.

Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is ready to lead India for the fourth time in his career and the second time in test cricket when they face Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 series opener on Friday at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

Regular skipper Rohit Sharma will miss the match because the 37-year-old welcomed his second kid on November 15th, Friday and is yet to arrive in Australia for the test series.

Bumrah will have his job cut out as India captain, given it will be their first match since the humiliating whitewash at home against New Zealand. Bumrah was rested for the third and final test of that series in Mumbai when New Zealand became only the second team since 2012 to defeat India in India.

What happened the last time Jasprit Bumrah captained India in a test match

This is not the first time Jasprit Bumrah will captain India in a test match. The first time Jasprit Bumrah donned the captain’s hat was in 2022 when India visited England for the rescheduled fifth test from the 2021 series.

Kohli, the then captain of the Indian team, led the visitors to a startling 2-1 lead in England before the fifth test was postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak in the Indian camp.

Rohit, who was only weeks ago confirmed as India’s all-format captain, succeeding Virat Kohli, missed the rescheduled match after testing positive for Covid-19. This led to Jasprit Bumrah being named as captain of the Indian team in the interim.

Bumrah lost the toss and India were asked to bat first in Edgbaston. India were soon reduced to 98/5 thanks to some excellent bowling by England pacers. However, Rishabh Pant (146) and Ravindra Jadeja (104) put on 222 runs for the 6th wicket and took India to 416 runs.

In reply, Jonny Bairstow’s 106 helped England conjure up 286 runs in their first innings. Bumrah led by taking three wickets, while Mohammed Siraj took four scalps. India then replied with 245 runs in their second innings with Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant scoring half-centuries.

Set 378 runs to win the match and level the series, England went after the leather as Jonny Bairstow hammered his second century of the match, scoring 114*, while Joe Root made 142 as England achieved the target with seven wickets in hand.

Bumrah was good with the ball and excellent with the bat. He hammered Stuart Broad for a world record 35 runs in one over including a no-ball and a wide.
