Jasprit Bumrah was awarded Player of the Match after his magnificent 4-over spell against Ireland in the 1st T20I.

The rain did play a spoilsport in the first T20I between India and Ireland, but it couldn’t prevent the outcome. India defeated Ireland by the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method while chasing 140 runs in 20 overs. India were two runs ahead in the DLS Method when rain arrived at Malahide and the game couldn’t progress further. Chasing a modest total, team India did have a setback just before the rain arrived and lost two back-to-back wickets to give Ireland a chance in the game. Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah won the toss and elected to bowl against Ireland. Bumrah had a wonderful comeback and picked up two wickets in his first over.

Ireland’s spirited comeback

The Indian captain had a roaring comeback and also won the Player of the Match award for his wonderful four-overs spell. Bumrah picked up two wickets and conceded only 24 runs in his spell. He, along with Ravi Bishnoi (2/23) and Prasidh Krishna (2/32), helped India restrict Ireland to 139 runs. Barry Mccarthy (51 runs in 33 balls) and Curtis Campher (39 runs in 33 balls) helped Ireland reach a decent total after being 59 for 6 in 10.3 overs. These two added 67 runs for the 7th wicket to help Ireland reach a position where they can put up a challenge. In the case of a full 20-over chase, Ireland would have created trouble with their bowling.

Jasprit Bumrah says ‘very happy’

Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah was extremely happy with his comeback after almost a year in Indian colours. Bumrah said, “Felt very good, so many sessions I did at the NCA, I didn’t feel I missed out a lot or was doing something new. Credit to the staff, they kept me in good spirits. You are not thinking about yourself; you are thinking about others out there. Not nervous, but very happy.” Bumrah, before playing against Ireland, last played for India in September 2022 against Australia in a T20I game. He then had a back injury and was out of action on many other big occasions as well.

Jasprit Bumrah has also praised Ireland’s comeback after being 59 for 6 at one point in their innings. Barry McCarthy and Curtis Campher, with their 67 runs, pulled Ireland out of a crisis. Bumrah said, “After a crisis, they played well, credit where credit is due. Even when you win, there are areas to improve. Everybody is very confident, they are very well prepared.” Indian opening batters did have a great start, but soon Craig Young struck two in two to put India under pressure. The 2nd T20I between India and Ireland will be played on Sunday, August 20th, in Malahide.
