Jasprit Bumrah clinched a five-wicket haul in the first innings of the Headingley test.

India pacer Jasprit Bumrah gave a magnificent performance in the first innings of the ongoing first test against England at Headingley, Leeds. The right-arm pacer clinched a five-wicket haul to help India earn a six-run lead in the first innings.

In response to India’s 471/10, England were bowled out for 465 in the first innings of the Headingley test. Bumrah dismissed both England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, and also grabbed the crucial wicket of Joe Root. Later, he removed Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue to complete his 14th fifer in the longest format of the game.

Although India have managed to showcase a decent form with the bat and ball in the encounter, they have struggled with their fielding. Notably, five catches were dropped by Indian players, out of which four came off Bumrah’s bowling.

However, Bumrah never lost his cool when his teammates dropped catches during his spells. Instead, he kept a smile on his face to hide his disappointment and went on to bowl the next delivery. During a conversation with BBC Test Match Special, the Indian speedstar revealed why dropped catches don’t bother him much.

“I like to play cricket to enjoy my time whenever I’m out on the field, so that is why I smile. Dropped catches- I understand nobody is doing it on purpose, and obviously everyone is trying their best. Cool weather with the ball sometimes makes it difficult to see over here as well. So I do understand,” the 31-year-old said.

“Some things are part and parcel of the game. I don’t want to let it affect me and then affect my future spells. I try to forget as soon as possible and quickly move forward,” he added

Meanwhile, the first England vs India test has witnessed brilliant performances by both teams, and they have an equal chance to win the encounter. In the second innings, India lost three wickets under 100 runs. KL Rahul, who looked solid with the bat on day three, will hold the key for his team.
