India's tour of South Africa 2024
BCCI secretary Jay Shah provides update on fast bowler Mohammed Shami's injury
Mohammed Shami has been included in India’s squad for SA tests subject to fitness.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is in the midst of significant decision-making, with updates on coaching staff extensions and player selections becoming pivotal topics of discussion. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has provided insights into the situation, shedding light on the progress of fast bowler Mohammed Shami’s injury and offering updates on crucial aspects of Indian cricket.
Negotiations regarding the extension of Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach have been temporarily addressed, with an interim decision in place until the Twenty20 World Cup in June. The lack of time led to this interim arrangement, and discussions about a long-term extension will occur post South Africa tour.
Jay Shah insights on Mohammed Shami
Jay Shah went on to clear the some question which many cricket fans had, just before the start of South Africa starting from Sunday December 10th.
Jay Shah explained, “We did not have time. We met with them and mutually agreed that he can continue. Once they return from South Africa, we will sit with him and decide on the tenure.” This clarification provides a glimpse into the administrative challenges faced by BCCI and emphasizes the importance of the South Africa tour in determining the coaching staff’s future.
Additionally, Shah touched upon the uncertainty surrounding Rohit Sharma’s selection in the Twenty20 side. With the skipper’s role in question and media reports suggesting a lack of clarity sought by Rohit, Shah mentioned, “The tournament (Twenty20 World Cup) starts in June. There’s the IPL before that and the series against Afghanistan. We will take a good decision.” This statement underscores the meticulous approach the BCCI is adopting regarding player selection.
Shah addressed the status of Mohammed Shami’s injury, expressing confidence that the pacer will be ready for the South Africa series. “Shami should be ready for the South Africa series. He is not at the NCA yet but will go there soon. We are confident he will recover in time,” Shah affirmed. This update brings optimism to Indian cricket fans as Shami’s return could bolster the team’s pace attack.
