England had won the toss and Ben Stokes had decided to bat first. Joe Root led from the front as he scored 104 runs, his 37th century in tests with 10 fours in 199 balls. England, who were in danger of being bowled out for under 300, managed to post 387 runs thanks to their lower order contributing.
Jamie Smith made 51 and Brydon Carse smashed 56 runs as Indian bowlers failed to dismiss the tail quickly. For India, Jasprit Bumrah took 5/74, while Mohammed Siraj and Nitish Kumar Reddy took two wickets each.
Joe Root breaks Rahul Dravid’s test record for most catches, thanks to a blinder in slips
Rahul Dravid’s record for the most catches made by a fielder in test history was surpassed by Joe Root. He accomplished the milestone after making a stunning diving catch at first slip on day 2 of the third test match against India at the Lord’s. Ben Stokes got Karun Nair’s outside edge on 40 in the last session of the day’s play.
Stationed at first slip, Root ducked to his left and dismissed Nair with a spectacular one-handed grab. The on-field referees decided to use a TV umpire, who, after seeing several replays from various perspectives, dismissed Karun Nair.

Root, 34, has established himself as one of England’s most reliable fielders, and this most recent catch only serves to enhance his standing. Dravid had previously held the record with 210 catches in 164 test matches. The Indian legend was overtaken by Root in his 156th game.
At Headingley, Leeds, Root had earlier tied Dravid’s record when he caught Shardul Thakur’s outside edge, which Josh Tongue had instigated. He moved past the Indian great with a spectacular grab after failing to make a single catch during the second test in Birmingham.
