Joe Root has become the first batsman to score 6000 runs in ICC World Test Championship history.

Joe Root achieved a brilliant record during the ongoing fifth test between India and England at The Oval, London. The premier batter became the first to reach the milestone of 6000 runs in ICC World Test Championship (WTC) history.

The right-handed batsman has been part of all four tournaments in ICC WTC. He has scored over 6000 runs in 126 innings across 69 tests so far. At a stunning average of 52.73, Root has smacked 20 centuries and 22 half-centuries.

Notably, the other top run-scorers in ICC WTC have not touched the mark of 5000 runs. Australia’s Steve Smith is the second-highest run-scorer, followed by his teammate Marnus Labuschagne. Below are the top five run-scorers in ICC WTC history.

Notably, Root became the second highest run-scorer in test cricket in the previous test against India at Old Trafford, Manchester. He leapfrogged Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting in the list of top run-scorers in the longest format of the game.

Root is also the leading run-scorer for England in the ongoing test series against India. He has hammered two centuries in the series. Meanwhile, the right-handed batsman scored a half-century on day four in the second inning of The Oval test.

England have a target of 374 runs in the encounter and they crossed 220 runs for the loss of three wickets in the second session on day 4. Earlier, India piled up 224/10 in the first innings and England posted 247/10, earning a 23-run lead. India were bowled out for 396/10 in the second innings, setting a gigantic 374-run target for England.
