Joe Root scored a century in the Manchester test.

During fourth test of the five-match series between England Cricket Team and Indian Cricket Team for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 at Old Trafford, Manchester, England batter Joe Root scored a hundred in first innings to script history and enter record books with multiple feats.

After overtaking Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis, now Root has overtaken Ricky Ponting to become the second-highest run-scorer in test cricket after Sachin Tendulkar. Former Australia captain Ponting mustered 13,378 runs in 168 tests during his career. Tendulkar is the highest run-scorer in the format with 15,921 runs in 200 games.

During the encounter, Root slammed his 38th test century and 12th ton against India.

Joe Root scores back-to-back centuries in the test series

Notably, Root hammered back-to-back centuries in the ongoing test series. Earlier, he also scored a century in the third test at the Lord’s. With Root’s ton, England crossed 400 runs on the scoreboard for the loss of four wickets in the first innings.

England are dominating the game and have taken a lead of over 100 runs in the first innings. Earlier, Zak Crawley (84), Ben Duckett (94), and Ollie Pope (71) scored half-centuries for England.

In the first innings, India posted 358/10 with Yashasvi Jaiswal (58), Sai Sudharsan (61), and Rishabh Pant (54) scoring fifties. Ben Stokes clinched a five-wicket haul, his first after more than eight years.
