Joe Root slammed a sensational century for England in the Lord’s test against India.
Joe Root has toppled fellow Englishman Harry Brook to become the new No.1 ranked test batter. This was confirmed when the International Cricket Council (ICC) updated the rankings on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
Harry Brook, who was crowned the number one test batter, dropped one spot following his two failures in the Lord’s test against the Indian Cricket Team. The daring batsman scored only 34 runs in two innings. Meanwhile, Joe Root’s outstanding performance at Lord’s earned him valuable rating points and replaced Brook as the new number one test batter.
At 34, Root is the second-oldest to hold the top spot, behind only Kumar Sangakkara, who was the top-ranked batter in tests in December 2014 at the age of 37. Root currently has 888 rating points and is on his eighth stint at the top of the test batter rankings.
Following his hard-hitting 48 in the third test match against the West Indies in Jamaica, Australian Steve Smith rose one spot to fourth place in the rankings. After scoring 46 and 42 in the low-scoring match against the Windies, Cameron Green moved up 16 spots to 29th in the standings.
Three Indians in the top 10 batters; total of five in the top 35 batters rankings

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant dropped one spot each to fifth and eighth place in the list of test hitters among Indians in the top 10. Following a lacklustre performance against England at Lord’s, India captain Shubman Gill fell three spots to ninth place.
Due to his second century at Lord’s, opener KL Rahul is ranked 35th in the ICC batting rankings, while all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has risen to 34th place with four straight test half-centuries.
In the test rankings for bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah is at the top. Australia pacer Scott Boland gained a startling six places to rise to the sixth spot after picking a hat-trick during the pink-ball test against the West Indies in Jamaica. Mitchell Starc took seven wickets in Jamaica, including a record-breaking fifer, yet he was still in 10th place.
Boland’s surge means Australia now has five players in the top 10 list of the world’s finest test bowlers, with skipper Pat Cummins (third), Josh Hazlewood (fifth), and Nathan Lyon (eighth).
