Joe Root gets out after a rusty innings of 28 runs against Netherlands at MCA Stadium.

The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 has reached its final stage, and the knockout stage is all set to kick off. Three teams have qualified for the semis, three teams are fighting for the fourth place, and four teams are fighting to qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan. The match no. 40 is underway at the MCA Stadium in Pune.

England are taking on Netherlands in an important clash. Both teams are out of the semi-finals race but need to win this game to qualify for the Champions Trophy. The game started with Jos Buttler winning the toss and deciding to bat first. England got off to a brilliant start, and both openers added 48 runs for the first wicket in just 7 overs.

Joe Root gets out in a comical fashion off Logan van Beek

Jonny Bairstow was the first wicket to get out. He made 15 runs. Dawid Malan carried his form and smashed a 36-ball half-century. Bairstow's wicket brought Joe Root to the crease. Malan and Root then added an important partnership for the second wicket and took the score over 100 runs. Both batters added 85 runs in 13.2 overs for the second wicket.

The partnership was broken by Logan van Beek in the 21st over. It was Joe Root who was the second batter to get out. But he got out in a comical fashion. It was the second ball of the over, and Root tried to play a peddle scoop shot for a boundary over the slip fielder. But the bowler bowled a straight delivery, which went through his legs and hit the stumps.

Hence, Root got out for playing a cheeky shot, which became a trap for him. He made 28 off 35 balls with one boundary. Just after his wicket, Malan also got out. The left-hander made 87 off 74 balls, with 10 fours and two sixes, and missed a well-deserved hundred by just 13 runs. He was run out.
