In a massive boost for England, ace pacer Jofra Archer has returned to First-Class (FC) cricket after a gap of four years. The right-arm pacer, who represents Sussex County in the domestic circuit, is playing in the ongoing County Championship 2025. Notably, he last played a FC game in May 2021.
Jofra Archer is part of Sussex’s playing XI in the 36th match of the tournament against Durham. Hence, it is good news for England as he can make his test comeback in the second test against India. Notably, Archer was expected to play for England Lions against India A in the unofficial test series before his return to test cricket.
However, he was ruled out of the clash due to a thumb injury sustained during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Ahead of India’s tour of England 2025, England national selector Luke Wright informed that Archer is highly likely to make his test comeback in the second test against India; however, he will first play domestic matches for Sussex.

Notably, Archer last played a test match for England in February 2021 against India. He could not make his comeback to the team due to injuries in his right elbow and a stress fracture in his back. The right-arm pacer has played 13 tests for England so far, clinching 42 wickets at an average of 31.04.
Meanwhile, the first test between England and India is underway at Headingley, Leeds. England are short of key pacers Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson in the encounter. Neither of them are likely to return in the second test. In such a scenario, Archer’s return will be a big boost for the hosts. The second test between England and India will commence on July 2 at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
