Jofra Archer ruled out of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023
Jofra Archer joined England's ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 squad as a travelling reserve in Mumbai on Thursday.
England are having numerous problems in their title defence in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. England suffered a massive shocking defeat against South Africa at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. South Africa decimated England by 229 runs in the league-round game. They have won only one game so far in their four league games in World Cup 2023. Apart from the back-to-back losses, England are also dealing with injury issues.
Reece Topley suffered a finger injury on his left hand while attempting a save. The ball hit the edge of his left-hand index finger which forced him to go out of the action for a while. Topley’s injury also raised concerns with the English side and there are possibilities of him missing out the remainder of the tournament. As England were looking for a possible replacement, they got another bad news. England’s head coach Mathew Mott confirmed that Jofra Archer will not be playing in the World Cup 2023.
No Jofra Archer for England
While giving an update about Reece Topley’s injury and the probability of his participation in the upcoming games, England’s head coach revealed, “We are still waiting on that but it’s very much looking like it’s a crack… but we will find out properly with X-rays. Jof (Jofra Archer) is not going to be considered for selection. He’s come out, he’s reported to the medical staff but he’s not going to be able to play a part in the end of this campaign.”
Jofra Archer joined the team before the South Africa match in Mumbai as travelling reserve, but won't be included in the team even if Topley gets ruled out. Jofra Archer still has not recovered from his injury and earlier he was part of the English camp only in travelling reserve. Jofra Archer has not played any competitive game after the IPL 2023. He took part in the IPL 2023 for Mumbai Indians earlier this year.
England's batting suffered a major collapse and lost 7 wickets in 100 runs against South Africa while chasing 400 runs. South Africa with the help of Heinrich Klaasen (109), Reeza Hendricks (85), Marco Jansen (75), Rassie van der Duseen (60) scored a massive total 399 runs. Reece Topley came in to bowl in the later part of the South African innings and picked up 3 wickets in his 8.5 overs spell. Topley didn’t come out to bat for England.
