Jofra Archer last played a test match in February 2021.
England and India will clash with each other in a test series starting this month. In the series, both sides will lock horns in five test matches. The series will also kickstart both team’s journey in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle.
Indian Cricket Team revealed their squad for the England test series last month. Shubman Gill, who has been appointed as the new test skipper, will lead the Indian team during the series. England Cricket Team announced their squad for the first test on Thursday, June 5. Ben Stokes will lead England against the visitors India.
Interestingly, England pacer Jofra Archer, who wasn’t named in the squad for for first test, is likely to make his test comeback during the England vs India test series. The right-arm pacer last played a test match for England in February 2021 against India. Since then, he has missed playing in the longest format of the game due to multiple injuries.
Jofra Archer likely to return in the second test between England and India
Interestingly, Jofra Archer has not played First Class (FC) cricket for four years due to various injuries. He underwent multiple surgeries on his right elbow and a stress fracture of his back. He was expected to play in the unofficial test series between India A and England Lions. However, he was rested due to a thumb injury he sustained during Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
Although Archer has not been named in England squad for the first test against India, he is highly likely to play in the second test. England national selector Luke Wright said Archer will play a FC game for Sussex in June. If all goes well, he will make his test comeback during the second test between England and India.
“Jof’s [Jofra Archer] also trucking along really well actually. The plan is for him to play a few second-team games, loading up in the second team for Sussex. And then the idea for him is to play for Sussex against Durham during the first Test [June 22-25]. Then, if all things go well, fingers crossed, he should be available for the second Test,” Wright was quoted as saying by ESPN Cricinfo.
The first test between England and India will be played from June 20 to 24 in Headingley. The second test will begin on July 2 at Edgbaston, Birmingham. The last match of the series will be played from July 31 to August 4 at Kia Oval, London.
Meanwhile, Archer has played 13 tests for England so far. He has bagged 42 wickets in 24 innings at an average of 31.05. He has also captured three five-wicket hauls in the longest format with best bowling figures of 6/45 in an innings.
