Indian cricketer Shubman Gill is all set to undertake the challenging task of leading the Indian Cricket Team in the upcoming test series against England. The right-handed batsman was recently named the new test captain after Rohit Sharma called his time on his test cricket career. Ahead of Gill’s first assignment as test captain, former England white-ball captain shared his opinion on Gill’s captaincy.
India and England are set to clash in five tests, with the opening game scheduled to commence on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. India’s tour of England 2025 will conclude with the final test at The Oval in London from July 31 to August 4.
Notably, the Indian Team will be short of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli during the series. Both batting legends announced their retirement from test cricket last month. Before Gill, Sharma and Kohli were the captains of India in the longest format of the game.
I think he’ll be mix of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma: Jos Buttler’s on Shubman Gill’s captaincy
During a podcast with former England cricketer Stuart Broad on ‘For the Love of Cricket’ show, Buttler said that Gill’s captaincy will be a mixture of Kohli and Sharma.
“He’s a really impressive player and an impressive young man. He’s pretty calm and measured when he speaks, but it’s interesting, I feel like on the field he’s got a bit of fight about him; a bit of intensity, quite passionate. I think he’ll be a mix of [Virat] Kohli and Rohit [Sharma],” Buttler said.
Buttler also asserted that Gill has learnt from Kohli’s aggressive attitude and Sharma’s calm personality on the field.
“Kohli [was] that sort of real aggressive, really transformed the Indian team, in your face, up for the contest. Rohit a bit on the other side, a bit more laid back, very cool, calm, collected customer, but with that sort of fight. I feel like, from my time knowing Shubman so far, he’ll be a bit in the middle. He’s obviously learned from those two guys… but he’ll be very much his own man,” the former England white-ball skipper further added.
Notably, Buttler has played under Gill’s captaincy in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Both were part of Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2025 and were impressive with the bat, scoring over 500 runs. Under Gill’s leadership, GT reached the playoffs but lost the Eliminator clash to Mumbai Indians.
