ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: Josh Hazlewood opens up about Virat Kohli's dropped catch in Chennai
Virat Kohli mistimed a pull shot against Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Marsh dropped his catch.
Indian top-order batting had a shocker of a start when three of their top four batters went back to the dressing room without scoring a single run against Australia in Chennai. Ishan Kishan (0), Rohit Sharma (0), and Shreyas Iyer (0) all had a terrible beginning to their ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. The situation could have been worse if Mitchell Marsh had not dropped Virat Kohli’s catch in the 8th over. Marsh put down Virat’s catch when India were 20 for 3 and 180 runs were still required.
Australian pace bowler Josh Hazlewood had a terrific start with the new ball as he knocked down Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer in one over. Virat Kohli was looking a bit troubled at the beginning of his innings when he mistimed a pull shot against Hazlewood in the 8th over that went up in the air. Mitchell Marsh came running in from short mid-wicket and tried to catch the ball. But while he was in his dive, he put down the catch and also the hopes of Australia.

Alex Carey also came running in for the catch, but he was a little far behind and slowed down after looking at Marsh steaming in. Josh Hazlewood opened up about the catch drop and also replied to the question of whether Carey should have gone for the catch, “I don’t think Carey could get there. I think it was Mitch’s catch, and probably just Carey got quite close in the end, so it might have just put Mitch off.” Marsh was disappointed after the catch.
Josh Hazlewood also added, “Yeah, he dropped a catch, it’s one of those things that happens, and everyone’s training hard and working hard off the field to hang on to them.” He also sais Virat's catch as not a game-changing moment in the game. Hazlewood replied, “No, I don’t think so; it was quite early, obviously, when that catch was dropped.” Kohli was surprised by the short ball and got a top edge while playing the pull shot.
Virat Kohli went on to score 85 runs on 116 balls with only six fours in his innings. Virat Kohli tried to rotate the strike and kept the pressure off himself and his partner KL Rahul in the 165-runs stand for the 4th wicket. KL Rahul remained unbeaten on 97 runs, and he finished the game with a magnificent six-over covers. Rahul was disappointed with the winning shot, as he was expecting it to go for four, and then he would have had another opportunity to complete his 7th ODI ton.
