Kane Williamson got run-out in a test match for the first time in 12 years.
The ongoing first test match between New Zealand and Australia at the Basin Reserve in Wellington saw a very bizarre run-out where veteran Kiwi batter Kane Williamson found himself in the middle of the pitch and collided with his partner on Day 2 of the match.
In reply to Australia’s 383, New Zealand suffered a big collapse and were reeling at 32/5. However, Glenn Phillips scored a crucial half-century along with Matt Henry’s 34-ball 42, which helped the hosts end their first innings on 183 runs. Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon once again showed his class as he picked up four wickets while the visitors’ seamers helped them take a 217-run lead in challenging conditions at Basin Reserve on Friday.
Australia’s near-perfect day was damaged by loss of early wickets in the second innings as NZ skipper Tim Southee ended his side’s poor day with the wickets of Steve Smith (0) and Marnus Labuschagne (2). With an exciting day 3 awaiting, at the time of Stumps Australia’s score reads 13/2 – leading by 217 runs – with Usman Khawaja (5) and Nathan Lyon (6) standing unbeaten at the crease.
Kane Williamson run-out incident
Veteran NZ batter Kane Williamson’s first innings in the first test against Australia came to an unfortunate end, getting out on a duck after a bizarre run-out.
The incident took place in the fifth over of Mitchell Starc, when Williamson drove the ball towards mid-off and called for a quick single. However, a horrible mix-up with his partner Will Young led to a mid-pitch collision, leaving Williamson stranded and ultimately resulting in end of Williamson’s innings by a throw from Marnus Labuschagne at the non-striker’s end. This early setback added to New Zealand’s struggles as they battled against the Australian bowling attack throughout their first innings.

After Kane Williamson’s unlucky dismissal against Australia in the first innings, this marks his only third run-out in test cricket till now, with the last instance happening in 2012.
Brief scores: Australia 383 & 13/2 (Usman Khawaja 5, Nathan Lyon 6, Tim Southee 2-5) vs New Zealand 179 (Glenn Phillips 71, Matt Henry 42; Nathan Lyon 4-43).
