Kane Williamson has been a stalwart for New Zealand cricket.
New Zealand veteran batter Kane Williamson will be seen in a newer role in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The premier batter has been roped in by the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as a strategic advisor for the upcoming season.
The reports in The Times of India claimed that Kane Williamson will be replacing Zaheer Khan in the franchise. The former Indian cricketer was the mentor of the team last year but his contract wasn’t renewed ahead of the new season, especially after the team’s performance last year.
The decision to appoint Kane Williamson is a personal choice of the franchise owner Sanjiv Goenka. He had conversations with the New Zealand batter and also captain Rishabh Pant and head coach Justin Langer were also involved in discussions.
I have always been impressed by his leadership qualities – Sanjiv Goenka

The owner of the franchise Sanjiv Goenka himself confirmed the development, saying that he has always been impressed by the leadership qualities of the Kiwi batter and his addition will inspire players as well. Speaking to The Times of India, he said:
“Kane’s strategic thinking and leadership played a pivotal role in New Zealand’s performances in the World Cup and Champions Trophy. He has had an impeccable record as an individual, as a human being and as a captain.
“I have always been impressed by his leadership qualities, calm demeanour and his ability to inspire players. After I had a meeting with him in London, Kane and head coach Justin Langer met and then Kane and Rishabh Pant had a long discussion. Then we all concluded that this is a very good choice.”
Williamson has been a stalwart for New Zealand in international cricket. He recently opted against taking New Zealand’s central contract to pursue a career in franchise cricket. His experience will also be a key factor for the franchise as they eye their maiden title win.
