ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 is all set to start in just 5–6 weeks from now on. The top ten teams will be taking part in the competition, including the defending champions England. The marquee event will start with a game between England and New Zealand on October 5 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The top four teams qualify to the semi-finals after each team plays one game against each of the other nine teams.

All eyes will be on how the big teams will perform, but some teams can be tricky to overcome. New Zealand, which ended the last two editions as runners-up, will look to win their maiden title. But their biggest concern is the injury of Kane Williamson. The Kiwi captain suffered an injury during the IPL 2023 and since then has been out of action.

The 33-year-old suffered a tear in the ligaments of his right knee in the first game of the IPL 2023 between the Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings. He also underwent surgery and has been completing his rehab. However, Williamson has shown a great recovery in this period and has started batting practice as well. On Monday, Kiwi head coach Gary Stead said that Kane Williamson has two more weeks to prove his fitness.

If everything goes well, Williamson can have a place in New Zealand’s 15-member squad for the mega event. In a discussion with New Zealand media, Stead said, “We’ve got about two weeks from now until we name that side. We’re going to give him every chance to use that full amount of time. He’s in full rehab mode; he’s back batting in the nets again, which is great to see.”

Williamson led New Zealand to the finals of the last edition in 2019, when England won the game by controversial boundary count rule. He is the backbone of the team’s batting, and his experience playing in India is immense. Williamson will be traveling with the team for the England tour. Meanwhile, veteran all-rounder James Neesham has withdrawn from the upcoming T20I series, starting on Wednesday, due to the birth of his first child.
