Rohit Sharma scored 3 and 6 in the Adelaide test against Australia.

India’s 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev has backed Rohit Sharma to bounce back as a batsman and captain but the former all-rounder also sternly commented that the 37-year-old should be dropped if he fails to perform soon.

Criticism and questions on Rohit have mounted significantly following India’s 10-wicket defeat in the second BGT 2024-25 test in Adelaide, more so after India won the first test in Perth by 295 runs under Jasprit Bumrah.

This was India’s fourth consecutive test match defeat under Rohit, carrying on from the historic 3-0 whitewash at home against New Zealand.

Rohit has been terrible with the bat as well in recent times. In his last six test matches, Sharma has averaged only 11.83 and crossed the 25-run mark only once.

Rohit Sharma doesn’t have to prove himself: Kapil Dev

For now, Kapil Dev has given his support to Rohit, pointing out that a few months ago, people had been celebrating him as a skipper when he led India to the title win at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

The former skipper is confident of Rohit bouncing back but asserted that his place will be under threat if he doesn’t find form soon.

“I think he doesn’t have to prove himself. He has done it for many years. So let’s not doubt somebody. I hope his form will come back that is more important. With one or two performances, you start doubting somebody’s captaincy who has done so well,” Kapil Dev was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

“Six months back, when he won the T20 World Cup, this question wouldn’t be asked. Let’s see if he doesn’t perform in future, he won’t be there. But knowing his ability and talent, he will bounce back,” he added.

The third BGT 2024-25 test will be played in Brisbane from December 14.
