Kapil Dev on Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul inclusion in Asia Cup squad
Former India captain Kapil Dev has spoken about the return of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer in the Asia Cup Squad
The announcement of India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup has raised discussions within the cricket fraternity. KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer’s return from injuries has drawn attention as a potential game-changer for India’s middle-order issues. The strategic inclusion of these talented batsmen seems to have caught the eye of none other than legendary cricketer Kapil Dev, who believes this move could be a hidden advantage for the team.
The Asia Cup squad was in line with expectations, marking the comebacks of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. With iyer’s positioned at 4 and Rahul at 5, the duo could potentially address India’s long-standing middle-order challenges. This prospect gains further weight with the return of Jasprit Bumrah after nearly a year, rendering the Asia Cup playing XI nearly self-evident.
‘What if the get injured,’ says Kapil Dev
Dev raises significant questions,“Ideally every player should be tested out. The World Cup is so close but you still haven’t given the players a chance? What if they head to the World Cup and then get injured?” His sentiment reflects a genuine concern for the team’s well-being and preparation. He suggests, “Here, at least they will get a chance to bat or bowl a little and get some rhythm going,” Kapil said on ABP News.
Iyer’s track record at No. 4 is remarkable, with 805 runs at an impressive average of 47.35 and a notable strike rate of 94.37. Rahul’s batting prowess at No. 5 is equally noteworthy, amassing 742 runs with a remarkable average of 53 and an impressive strike rate of 99.33. These numbers underline their potential contributions to the team’s success.
Former India captain underscores the significance of seizing the opportunity presented by the Asia Cup. He advocates for players to express themselves and solidify their positions before the impending World Cup. He emphasizes that, while the World Cup is hosted in India, selecting the best and fittest team is paramount. He believes that granting players a fair chance is not only beneficial for the individuals but also respectful of the selectors’ efforts.
“You have a wonderful opportunity to create a team for the World Cup and the Asia Cup is a fine platform. I want these players to go and express themselves. But if there is any sort of question mark, they don’t need to be around. If you do not give them a chance, it will be unfair to not just the players but also the selectors. I am aware that the World Cup is taking place in India but you need to pick the best and fittest team,” added the legendary India all-rounder.
