KL Rahul has replaced Shreyas Iyer in Indian playing XI as Iyer got a back spasm.

India’s wicket-keeper in ODIs, KL Rahul, is making his comeback on the field after a long gap of five months. Rahul stayed away from the game for a long time due to an injury he sustained while playing for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2023. Rahul pulled his calf-muscle against Royal Challengers Bangalore, which made him go through surgery and a long rehabilitation period at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore. Just before Asia Cup team selection, he sustained a niggle and missed the first two league games of the tournament.

KL Rahul will be coming out to bat against Pakistan, but whether he will keep wickets or play just as a batter is still a mystery to be solved in the second innings. Fans are also excited to see KL Rahul join Indian team, as his comeback is a positive sign before the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. Rahul was India’s preferred wicket-keeper for the mega event, but his prevailing injuries were making them worried about the World Cup squad. According to a few media reports, team India were going ahead with Ishan Kishan as wicket-keeper's choice in the playing XI, but Iyer’s injury at the last moment prompted team management to give KL Rahul his much-awaited comeback. Just before the game, KL Rahul said that he was ready to keep wickets for a full 50 overs. He said, "I have prepared really well for the upcoming tournaments. I am totally ready to bat and ready to keep wickets for 50 overs." KL Rahul was also seen doing wicket-keeping drills before the game, suggesting he has achieved full fitness.

Team India have gotten off to a flying start against Pakistan's pace attack at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Indian captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are scoring over 6-7 runs per over. Rohit started off his scoring with a magnificent six over fine leg against Shaheen Afridi. Shubman Gill also made Pakistan fielders do a lot of work with his textbook shots. In the previous game, Shaheen Afridi rattled the Indian top-order batting with his pace and movement of the wicket at Pallekele Stadium in Kandy.
