Kyle Mayers sheds light on the fiery altercation with Virat Kohli in IPL 2023
West Indies all-rounder Kyle Mayers has opened up on the spat in LSG vs RCB clash in IPL 2023.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 witnessed an intense face-off between Royal Challengers Bangalore’s batsmen Virat Kohli and members of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), especially mentor Gautam Gambhir and pacer Naveen-ul-Haq. Amidst the heated atmosphere, LSG opener Kyle Mayers engaged in a verbal exchange with Kohli, adding to the intensity of the match.
The incident occurred at the Ekana Sports City stadium in Lucknow on May 1, 2023. While Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) emerged victorious against the Lucknow Super Giants. Throughout the match, Kohli displayed his passion and emotions, particularly when an LSG batter was dismissed during their chase. The tension between the two teams escalated further when Mayers, the LSG opener, approached Kohli after the match.
Visuals from the game revealed Gambhir, the mentor of LSG, reacting animatedly to Kohli, who remained composed and seemingly calm. However, Mayers decided to exchange words with the RCB batter, resulting in a heated moment on the field. Sensing the escalating situation, other players, including KL Rahul, and the support staff quickly intervened to prevent any physical altercation.
It is worth noting that this wasn’t the first time Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir found themselves involved in on-field altercations. During Gambhir’s stint as the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Virat Kohli’s stint leading the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the two captains exchanged heated words on multiple occasions, showcasing their competitive spirit and strong personalities.
After the match, Kohli was seen having a lengthy discussion with the Lucknow Super Giants’ captain, Rahul, suggesting an attempt to resolve the tensions. While the exact content of Mayers and Kohli’s conversation remains undisclosed, it was apparent that emotions ran high during their exchange.
In a recent interview on Fan Code, Mayers shed light on the incident, providing insight into the nature of the “banter” with Kohli during the IPL match. When asked about Kohli’s aggressive behavior on the field, Mayers praised it. “It’s great; sometimes you need to get at your opposition to create any chance to get out of the game. Being aggressive is always good; it shows courage and the willingness to get your team over the line,” said the LSG and West Indies player.
However, the IPL responded to the incident by taking disciplinary action. Members of both the teams, Gambhir, Naveen, and Kohli were fined for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. Gambhir, and Kohli faced a 100% match fee fine, while Naveen was fined 50% of his match fee.
