Afghanistan will take on England in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on February 26.

The eighth match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be played between Afghanistan and England at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on February 26, Wednesday.

Both teams are coming into this game after losing their respective opening matches of the tournament. England were on the receiving end of a sensational 351-run chase by Australia in Lahore. The Three Lions were outclassed by Josh Inglis, who starred for the Aussies with an unbeaten 120 off 86 balls.

Afghanistan, on the other hand, were no match for South Africa’s lethal bowling attack. Chasing a 316-run target, the Asian underdogs were bundled out for just 208 runs. Rahmat Shah top-scored for them with 90 off 92 balls.

A victory will boost both teams’ semi-final qualification chances, while a defeat will leave them reliant on other results to progress further in the tournament.

On that note, let’s take a look at what happened when last time Afghanistan faced England in an ODI.

What happened when last time Afghanistan faced England in an ODI?

Afghanistan and England have come across only three times in ODI cricket so far. All of those three encounters have come in the ICC Cricket World Cups. They faced each other in 2015, 2019 and 2023 editions of the ICC Cricket World Cup.

The last time Afghanistan faced England in an ODI was during the league stage of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in Delhi. Afghanistan secured their maiden ODI victory against the Three Lions by 69 runs.

Batting first, Afghanistan were powered by a brilliant half-century from Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who scored 80 off 57 balls, including eight fours and four sixes. He stitched a 114-run stand for the opening wicket with Ibrahim Zadran, setting the foundation for Afghanistan’s respectable first-innings total.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman played a quickfire knock of 28 off 16 balls, helping Afghanistan reach 284 runs.

In the chase, England got off to a poor start, slipping to 33/2. Rashid Khan and Mujeeb starred for Afghanistan picking three wickets each.

England continued to lose wickets at regular intervals and were eventually bowled out for 215 runs. Harry Brook top-scored for them with 66 runs, while Mujeeb was named Player of the Match for his all-round effort.
