Afghanistan will take on Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on February 28.

The 10th match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will take place between Afghanistan and Australia in Lahore on February 28.

The game holds special importance in the semi-finals race in Group B as a win for either side will secure their spot in the knockout stage of the tournament.

If Afghanistan lose, they will be eliminated from the tournament with Australia and South Africa qualifying from Group B. However, if Australia fail to win, they will have to rely on their Ashes rivals, England, to defeat South Africa by a big margin, ensuring South Africa’s NRR drops below Australia’s.

On that note, let’s take a look at what happened when last time Australia faced Afghanistan in an international cricket match.

What happened when last time Australia faced Afghanistan in an international cricket match?

Afghanistan and Australia last faced each other in international cricket during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in June in Kingston. Afghanistan made history in that match by securing their first-ever international win against Australia.

Batting first, Afghanistan were led by brilliant half-centuries from Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who scored 50 and 61 runs respectively to lay the foundation for a respectable first-innings total.

Afghanistan then suffered a collapse, slipping from 118/0 in 15 overs to 148/6 in 20 overs. Pat Cummins starred for Australia with 3/28 in four overs.

In the chase, Australia got off to a shaky start, slipping to 32/3. Naveen-ul-Haq and Gulbadin Naib led Afghanistan’s bowling, combining for seven wickets.

Australia continued to lose wickets at regular intervals and were eventually bowled out for 127 runs. Glenn Maxwell top-scored for them with 59 runs, while Gulbadin was named Player of the Match for his match figures of 4/20.

Afghanistan then qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament, making it their first-ever semi-final appearance in any ICC tournament. Can Afghanistan repeat their heroics and defeat Australia to make it to their second ICC event semi-finals? We’ll have to wait and watch.
