India lost to South Africa in their opening game of Super 8 in T20 World Cup 2026.
India Cricket Team’s dominance in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 was shattered by South Africa in the Super 8 clash on Sunday, February 22. The Aiden Markram & Co. outplayed the Men-in-Blue by a huge margin of 76 runs, handing them a humiliating defeat after 12 straight wins in ICC events.
Despite getting three early wickets, Indian bowlers failed to restrict South Africa to a low score as middle-order batters in Dewald Brewis (45), David Miller (63), and Tristan Stubbs (44*) took the scoreboard to a respectable 187/7.
In response, India suffered a batting collapse, losing eight wickets with less than 100 runs and then ultimately got out for 111 runs, losing by big margin.
Notably, India need to win their next two matches against West Indies and Zimbabwe at any cost to qualify for the semi-finals. Another loss will destroy their chances of progressing to the next round and clinching the title.
Although the Men in Blue have commenced the Super 8 round with a big loss, they have bounced back from a similar situation in an earlier edition of T20 World Cup. Fans are disappointed after India’s defeat just at the start of the Super 8 and are worried whether they will be eliminated in Round 2 itself.
However, the Men-in-Blue made a classic comeback after losing the first game of Round 2 in the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007.
India made a fabulous comeback after losing opening game in Round 2 in T20 World Cup 2007

Under MS Dhoni’s captaincy in T20 World Cup 2007, India defeated Pakistan in the first round through the bowl-out method, while another game against Scotland was washed out due to rain. In the opening game of Round 2, the Men-in-Blue suffered a big blow after losing against New Zealand by 10 runs.
They were on the verge of getting eliminated, but made a superb comeback in the next two matches. The MS Dhoni & Co. outplayed England by 18 runs and South Africa by 37 runs to register back-to-back victories.
Against England, where former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh rocked with his incredible six consecutive sixes, India piled up a gigantic 218-4. Against the Proteas, they posted 153/5 batting first but managed to defend the total with RP Singh’s four-wicket haul.
Crushing both strong teams, they made it to the semi-finals from their pool (Group E) alongside New Zealand. In the semi-finals, they outplayed the mighty Australia by 15 runs, thanks to a stunning half-century by Yuvraj that helped India to post a mammoth 188/5 in the first innings.
Later, they also scripted history by outplaying Pakistan in the final by a close margin of just five runs, winning the trophy in the inaugural season.
