The Indian cricket team will not be travelling to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
The BCCI has reportedly informed the ICC that the Indian cricket team will not be flying to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which is scheduled to kick off on February 19 and run until March 9.
The Champions Trophy 2025 is the first global tournament that Pakistan is slated to host since the 1996 World Cup, which they co-hosted with India.
According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, the BCCI has told the ICC that the Indian government had advised them to not send the Indian cricket team to their neighbouring country with whom they have agitated political ties.
Because of the political issues between the two Asian countries, India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series since 2013, when Pakistan toured India.
India have not travelled to Pakistan for an international series for a long time. How long? Know here.
When was the last time the Indian cricket team toured Pakistan for an international series?
The last time the Indian cricket team visited Pakistan was in 2008 for the Asia Cup, in which India lost the final to Sri Lanka. India last toured Pakistan for a bilateral series in 2006, when Pakistan won the three-test series by 1-0 and India won the five-ODI series by 4-1.
Since 2013, the two teams have been meeting only in ICC events and Asia Cups. The last meeting in international cricket was during the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in New York, where India won a thrilling encounter.
Talking about the Champions Trophy, Pakistan are the defending champions, having won the 2017 edition in England by beating India in the final.
They have been given the hosting rights for the Champions Trophy 2025. However, with India not travelling, the tournament will be played in a hybrid model, with India’s games, including one semi-final and the final if they reach it, being scheduled elsewhere. Sri Lanka and UAE have emerged as the strong contenders to host a part of the tournament.
The Asia Cup 2023 was played in a hybrid model, with Sri Lanka hosting India’s matches, including the final.
