New Zealand will take on India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final on March 9.
After 14 days of action and 14 matches, we’re now just two sleeps away from the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which will be played between India and New Zealand on Sunday, March 9 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.
The two teams have been the strongest in the competition so far. Both have found the right combination with deep batting and six bowling options. They met in the last group stage game of Group A, where India emerged victorious by 44 runs.
India’s four-man spin attack has worked wonders for them and has helped the team in successfully restricting opponents to low scores. New Zealand, on the other hand, have relied on their fast bowlers, with Matt Henry leading the charts with 10 wickets in the tournament.
This will be India’s fifth final in the history of ICC Champions Trophy, having won the tournament twice, and for New Zealand, it will be their third final. New Zealand won one and lost one.
On that note, let’s take a look at what happened when the last time New Zealand played in an ICC Champions Trophy final.
What happened last time when New Zealand played an ICC Champions Trophy final?
The last time New Zealand played in an ICC Champions Trophy final was in the 2009 edition, where they faced Australia in Centurion. New Zealand were outclassed in the game as Australia won the contest by six wickets to clinch their second Champions Trophy title.
Batting first, New Zealand never gained any momentum as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. The Kiwis were reduced to 94/5 in 27 overs before Neil Broom and James Franklin joined forces for a 65-run stand for the sixth wicket.
Once their partnership was broken, New Zealand showed no resistance and were eventually restricted to 200/9 in 50 overs. Off-spinner Nathan Hauritz was the standout bowler for the Aussies, taking 3/37 in his quota of 10 overs.
In reply, Australia lost Tim Paine and Ricky Ponting early, finding themselves at 6/2 in the third over. Shane Watson and Cameron White then stabilized the innings with a 128-run partnership for the third wicket.
Watson remained unbeaten and guided Australia to a historic triumph with 105 off 129 balls, including 10 fours and four sixes. He was named Player of the Match for his efforts.
New Zealand would aim to lift their second ICC Champions Trophy title on Sunday, when they face India in the title clash. Notably, they had defeated India in the title clash in 2000 edition of the tournament, then known as ICC Knockout Trophy, to lift their maiden title.
