The first edition of the ICC Champions Trophy was played in 1998.

The ICC Champions Trophy is considered one of the most competitive ICC tournaments. Compared to the World Cup, the Champions Trophy is a much shorter tournament that features eight teams.

Played first in 1998, the tournament was initially named the ICC Knockout Trophy, aimed at raising funds for the development of the game in non-test-playing countries.

Since the 2002 edition, the hosting of the Champions Trophy has been shared among countries under an unofficial rotation system.

On that note, let’s take a look at list of ICC Champions Trophy winners.

List of all ICC Champions Trophy winners:

1. South Africa – 1998

South Africa won the first edition of the ICC Champions Trophy in 1998, then known as the ICC Knockout Trophy. A total of nine teams participated in the tournament that was held in Bangladesh.

South Africa reached the final by defeating England and Sri Lanka in the quarter-finals and semi-finals by six wickets and 92 runs respectively.

In the final, they chased down a tricky 246-run target against the West Indies. Jacques Kallis was named Player of the Match for scoring 37 runs with the bat and then taking five wickets in the final.

2. New Zealand – 2000

New Zealand defeated India by four wickets in the final of the 2000 ICC Knockout Trophy to clinch their maiden title.

The second edition of the Champions Trophy was held in Zimbabwe and featured 11 teams. The Kiwis eliminated Zimbabwe in the quarter-finals before defeating Pakistan by four wickets in the semi-finals.

Chris Cairns starred in the final against India, smashing an unbeaten 102 off 113 balls to steer New Zealand to a four-wicket victory while chasing 265.

3. Sri Lanka and India – 2002

The ICC Knockout Trophy was re-branded as the ICC Champions Trophy ahead of its 2002 edition and featured 12 nations, who were divided into four groups of three teams each.

What makes the 2002 edition unique is that it had shared winners, Sri Lanka and India, due to a rain-marred final.

India defeated South Africa by 10 runs in the semi-finals, while Sri Lanka eliminated Australia by seven wickets in their semi-final clash.

Rain forced the abandonment of the final on both the scheduled day and the reserve day, and hence, India and Sri Lanka were declared joint-winners.

4. West Indies – 2004

West Indies rolled back the years to get back to their glory days in the 2004 edition of the ICC Champions Trophy in England. The tournament featured a total of 12 teams.

West Indies eliminated Pakistan in the semi-finals before edging past England in one of the all-time classic finals in the Champions Trophy history.

Chasing 218, West Indies looked down and out at 147/8. Then, lower-order batters Courtney Browne and Ian Bradshaw put together an unbeaten 71-run stand for the ninth wicket to seal the trophy.

5. Australia – 2006

Ricky Ponting led Australia to end their ICC Champions Trophy drought in the 2006 edition. The tournament, hosted by India, featured a total of 10 teams.

After finishing the group stage with two wins and a loss, Australia defeated New Zealand by 34 runs in the semi-finals.

In the final, Australia bowled out West Indies for just 138 runs and clinched the trophy with an eight-wicket win. Shane Watson was named Player of the Match for his 57 runs and two wickets in the game.

6. Australia – 2009

Australia are the only team to win back-to-back ICC Champions Trophy titles. They achieved this memorable feat in 2009 after defeating New Zealand in the final at Centurion.

Australia ended the group stage with two wins to secure their spot in the semi-finals of the competition that featured eight teams.

The Aussies thrashed arch-rivals England by nine wickets in a one-sided semi-final before beating New Zealand by four wickets in the final. Shane Watson was named Player of the Match for his brilliant century in the title clash.

7. India – 2013

India clinched their second ICC Champions Trophy title (first outright) in 2013, defeating hosts England in the final by five runs in Birmingham.

India won all three group games to qualify for the semi-finals. In the semi-final clash against Sri Lanka, the Men in Blue comfortably chased down the 182-run target, winning the game by eight wickets.

The final was shortened to 20 overs per side due to rain interruptions and India edged past England on the last ball of the game. Ravindra Jadeja was named Player of the Match for scoring 33 runs and taking two wickets in the game.

8. Pakistan – 2017

Pakistan won their maiden ICC Champions Trophy title when they defeated arch-rivals India in a one-sided final at The Oval in 2017.

Drawn in Group A, Pakistan finished second in the group stage to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament.

In the semi-final, Pakistan defeated hosts England by eight wickets before thumping India by 180 runs in the final. Fakhar Zaman was named Player of the Match in the final for his brilliant 114 off 106 balls.

9. India – 2025

India scripted history with their record third ICC Champions Trophy title triumph in 2025. They defeated New Zealand by four wickets in the final in Dubai to clinch the trophy.

Drawn in Group A, India remained unbeaten in the group stage, defeating Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand. They then smashed Australia in the semi-final before defeating New Zealand in the final.

Captain Rohit Sharma was named Player of the Match in the final for his knock of 76 runs.
