Since the inaugural edition, several great performers have left their marks on every edition. Some helped their team win the title, while others were not lucky enough.
The top performer among everyone is awarded the Player of the Tournament award, and when the best players are competing together, it becomes difficult to win this award.
In this article, we will talk about the list of players who won the Player of the Tournament award in the T20 World Cup from the first to the latest edition.
From 2007 to 2022: List of all Man of the Tournament award winners at ICC T20 World Cup
1. 2007 T20 World Cup – Shahid Afridi (Pakistan)
Team India won the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup tournament under MS Dhoni’s captaincy in 2007 in South Africa and Pakistan finished as runners-up of the tournament. All-rounder Shahid Afridi had an incredible tournament and he bagged the Player of the Tournament award.
Afridi played seven games and took a total of 12 wickets. He also scored 91 runs at a strike rate of 197.82. His all-round shows were one of the key reasons that Pakistan reached the final. But unfortunately, he couldn’t help his team to victory.
2. 2009 T20 World Cup – Tillakaratne Dilshan (Sri Lanka)
Pakistan won the 2009 T20 World Cup under Younis Khan’s leadership, beating Sri Lanka in the final. That edition saw the beast T20I mode of Sri Lanka opener Tillakaratne Dilshan. He ended the tournament as the top scorer and became the first batter to score 300 or more in a single edition of the tournament.
But, Dilshan, who was averaging more than 60 before the final, got out for a duck in the final and Sri Lanka lost the game. Dilshan ended up with 317 runs at an average of 52 and a strike rate of 144. He won the Player of the Tournament award.
3. 2010 T20 World Cup – Kevin Pietersen (England)
The third edition of the ICC T20 World Cup took place in the West Indies in 2010. Paul Collingwood led England to the title victory after beating Australia in the final. This was England’s first-ever ICC World Cup trophy in any format.
Craig Kieswetter (63 off 49) was the hero in the final, while it was Kevin Pietersen who charged England to victory with his consistent performances throughout the competition. He was adjudged the Player of the Tournament for scoring 248 runs in six innings at an average of 62 and a strike rate of 137.
4. 2012 T20 World Cup – Shane Watson (Australia)
In the ICC T20 World Cup 2012, for the first time a player became the Man of the Tournament despite his team not reaching the finals. It was Shane Watson, who had a phenomenal tournament with both bat and ball.
Australia lost in the semi-finals, but Watson ended the tournament with the most runs. He scored 249 runs in six innings at an average of 49 and a strike rate of 150. He also took 11 wickets with the ball.
5. 2014 T20 World Cup – Virat Kohli (India)
The 2014 edition of the ICC T20 World Cup was played in Bangladesh. Two Asian sides made it to the final, India and Sri Lanka. India played brilliantly throughout, and the credit goes to Virat Kohli. He was unstoppable in that edition and went on to score the most runs by a batter in a single edition.
Kohli scored 319 runs at an average of 106 and a strike rate of 129, with four half-centuries. But unfortunately, India lost the final. Kohli was adjudged Player of the Tournament.
6. 2016 T20 World Cup – Virat Kohli (India)
Virat Kohli made history when he bagged Player of the Tournament awards in consecutive editions. The 2016 ICC T20 World Cup took place in India. Even as India were inconsistent as a team, Kohli was at his consistent best, carrying the side to the semi-finals.
Kohli scored 273 runs in five innings at an average of 136.50 and a strike rate of 146.77, with three half-centuries, to win Player of the Tournament award.
7. 2021 T20 World Cup – David Warner (Australia)
The next edition of the ICC T20 World Cup took five years later, in 2021 in the UAE, when Australia won their maiden men’s T20 world title. Aaron Finch led them to victory, while David Warner was their biggest contributor with the bat.
The left-handed opener was consistent throughout and played brilliant knocks in the semi-final against Pakistan and the final against New Zealand. Warner scored 289 runs at an average of 48 and a strike rate of 146.70. It was only the second time a member of the winning team had won the Player of the Tournament award.
8. 2022 T20 World Cup – Sam Curran (England)
England won their second ICC T20 World Cup title in 2022, which was held in Australia. After a rusty start, England picked up the pace and didn’t look back. There were a number of good performances for them, but Sam Curran was the outstanding one with the ball.
That tournament marked the emergence of Curran as death-overs bowler. He took 13 wickets at an economy rate of 6.52 and a best of 5/10. England beat Pakistan to win the final, and Curran won the Man of the Tournament award. He was also the Man of the Match in the final.
9. 2024 T20 World Cup – Jasprit Bumrah (India)
Generally, you don’t see bowlers getting the accolades in T20 cricket because batters mostly win all the awards. But Jasprit Bumrah belongs to a different league; that’s what he showed in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. He was the standout bowler in the tournament and was one of the key reasons that India won the tournament. He took 15 wickets in eight matches at an economy rate of 4.17, and his spell of 2/18 in the final became a key for India to lift the title. Hence, Bumrah became the Player of the Tournament in 2024.
