List of all IPL hat-tricks taken in tournament history
Gujarat Titans’ Rashid Khan took the 22nd hat-trick of the IPL 2023.
The list of hat tricks in IPL is dominated by leg-spinners and not having the name of Rashid Khan for too long seems improbable. The wizardry of Rashid Khan added another feather to his hat when he took a hat trick against Kolkata Knight Riders and got his name up on the list as the 19th player to take a hat trick in the history of the Indian Premier League.
The Afghan spinner took the ball in his hands in the 17th over of the game against KKR in match no. 13 of IPL 2023 and turned things in the span of three balls. Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, and Shardul Thakur, in that order, fell victim to Rashid’s chicanery. Cruising along comfortably up until then, KKR seemed to be in control of the chase. Venkatesh Iyer and Nitish Rana’s 100-run partnership set up the chase nicely for the lower order to finish the game.
A match filled with ebbs and flows, it was the heroics of Rinku Singh at the end that took the game for KKR from the jaws of defeat. He clobbered five back-to-back sixes in the last over of the game against Yash Dayal and won the game for KKR.
Here’s the list of all IPL hat-tricks taken in the history of the tournament:
1. Lakshmipathy Balaji (Chennai Super Kings) vs Punjab Kings (IPL 2008)
The first-ever bowler to have taken a hat-trick in the history of the league was CSK’s fast bowler, Lakshmipathy Balaji back in the inaugural edition. The name of the players he got out was: Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla, and VRV Singh.
2. Amit Mishra (Delhi Daredevils) vs Deccan Chargers (IPL 2008)
In the same year, Amit Mishra showcased his skills and took the second hat trick of the IPL against the Deccan Chargers. The name of the players he got out was: Ravi Teja, Pragyan Ojha, and RP Singh.
3. Makhaya Ntini (Chennai Super Kings) vs Kolkata Knight Riders (IPL 2008)
The South African pacer took the third hat trick in the first year itself against the unit of KKR. It was the second hat trick by a CSK player. The name of the players he got out was: Sourav Ganguly, DB Das, and David Hussey.
4. Yuvraj Singh (Kings XI Punjab) vs Royal Challengers Bangalore (IPL 2009)
Known for his batting destruction, Yuvraj Singh was under the limelight with the ball. In 2009 against RCB, Yuvraj took a hat trick in Durban, claiming the following players to his name:- Robin Uthappa, Jacques Kallis, and Mark Boucher.
5. Rohit Sharma (Deccan Chargers) vs Mumbai Indians (IPL 2009)
Another batter who took the second hat trick of the 2009 season was Rohit Sharma, Playing for Deccan Chargers, Rohit claimed the following players to claim a hat trick: Abhishek Nayar, JP Duminy, and Harbhajan Singh.
6. Yuvraj Singh (Kings XI Punjab) vs Deccan Chargers (IPL 2009)
Third hat trick of 2009, the second for Yuvraj Singh, the slow orthodox left-arm spinner wreaked havoc with the ball. In the process, he claimed the following triplet:- Herschelle Gibbs, Andrew Symonds, and Venugopal Rao.
7. Praveen Kumar (Royal Challengers Bangalore) vs Rajasthan Royals (IPL 2010)
The swing bowler from Royal Challengers Bangalore entered the list with a hat trick against Rajasthan Royals in 2010. He claimed the wickets of the following players: Damien Martyn, Sumit Narwal, and Paras Dogra.
8. Amit Mishra (Kings XI Punjab) vs Deccan Chargers (IPL 2011)
One of the most successful bowlers in the history of IPL, Amit Mishra had a good outing against Deccan Chargers in 2011 when he claimed his second hat trick, claiming the following batters: Ryan McLaren, Mandeep Singh, and Ryan Harris.
9. Ajit Chandila (Rajasthan Royals) vs Pune Warriors India (IPL 2012)
The lanky off-spinner impressed everyone with his all-around abilities and especially, with his skills with the ball. The first uncapped player to take a hat trick in IPL, Ajit Chandila put on a show against Pune Warriors India in 2012, taking the wickets of the batters, namely- Jesse Ryder, Sourav Ganguly, and Robin Uthappa.
10. Sunil Narine (Kolkata Knight Riders) vs Kings XI Punjab (IPL 2013)
The mystery spinner also got up on the list when he took a hat trick against the then Kings XI Punjab in 2013. In the process, he took the following wickets: David Hussey, Azhar Mahmood, and Gurkeerat Singh.
11. Amit Mishra (Sunrisers Hyderabad) vs Pune Warriors India (IPL 2013)
Amit Mishra’s third overall and 2013 season’s second hat trick came when Amit was playing under a new franchise – Sunrisers Hyderabad. One of the most successful seasons for Amit happened in the orange jersey with SRH. He claimed the following players in his hat trick: Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rahul Sharma, and Ashok Dinda.
12. Pravin Tambe (Rajasthan Royals) vs Kolkata Knight Riders (IPL 2014)
During the 2014 IPL edition, the leg-spinner claimed a famous hat trick while representing RR against KKR. He achieved a two-ball hat-trick in the 16th over of KKR’s innings as he first had Manish Pandey (0) stumped off a wide ball. Followed were the wickets of Yusuf Pathan and Ryan ten Doeschate.
13. Shane Watson (Rajasthan Royals) vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (IPL 2014)
Coincidentally, the 2014 season saw a second hat trick. It was again taken by a RR bowler and at the same venue of Ahmedabad, this time by the all-rounder, Shane Watson. He claimed the following batters to his name: Shikhar Dhawan, Moises Henriques, and Karn Sharma.
14. Axar Patel (Kings XI Punjab) vs Gujarat Lions (IPL 2016)
The wily left-arm spinner, Axar Patel was making a name for himself back in 2016. His name started to appear in the headlines more often than not. One such incident happen when the spinner claimed a hat trick against Gujarat Lions in 2016. The batters he got out were: Dinesh Karthik, Dwayne Bravo, and Ravindra Jadeja.
15. Samuel Badree (Royal Challengers Bangalore) vs Mumbai Indians (IPL 2017)
The canny operator in the powerplays, Samuel Badree, another leg spinner got etched his name in the elite list of players to take hat tricks in IPL. It was the game against Mumbai Indians back in 2017 when Badree got a hat trick. Parthiv Patel, Mitchell McClenaghan, and Rohit Sharma were the three batters he got to his name in the hat trick.
16. Andrew Tye (Gujarat Lions) vs Rising Pune Supergiants (IPL 2017)
The shrewd bowler from Australia, Andrew Tye was well known for his death bowling. On his IPL debut, Tye claimed a hat trick of the following players: Ankit Sharma, Manoj Tiwary, and Shardul Thakur.
17. Jaydev Unadkat (Rising Pune Supergiants) vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (IPL 2017)
Bowling the final over of the game, defending 13 runs, Jaydev Unadtkat bowled one of the best overs ever bowled in the history of the league. He bowled a hat trick maiden to claim a 12-run victory for his team. Bipul Sharma, Rashid Khan, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were the three batters he got out.
18. Sam Curran (Kings XI Punjab) vs Delhi Capitals (IPL 2019)
English all-rounder Sam Curran dismissed Harshal Patel, Kagiso Rabada, and Sandeep Lamichhane in consecutive deliveries in the Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Delhi Capitals to record the 18th hat trick in the tournament’s history.
19. Shreyas Gopal (Rajasthan Royals) vs Royal Challengers Bangalore (IPL 2019)
The fourth Rajasthan Royals player to ever take a hat trick in IPL was Shreyas Gopal. Shreyas Gopal dismissed Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Marcus Stoinis in a rain-curtailed 5-over match in Bangalore.
20. Harshal Patel (Royal Challengers Bangalore) vs Mumbai Indians (IPL 2019)
Harshal Patel became the third RCB bowler to take a hat-trick in IPL, with Praveen Kumar and Samuel Badree being the first two to do so. Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, and Rahul Chahar became the victims of Harshal’s street-smart bowling.
21. Yuzvendra Chahal (Rajasthan Royals) vs Kolkata Knight Riders (IPL 2022)
Yuzvendra Chahal has been one of the most talked about spinners in IPL. Right from his early days, Chahal has impressed everyone with his shrewd operations. Last year against KKR, Chahal registered his best bowling figures in IPL of 5/40 which included the hat trick of Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Mavi, and Pat Cummins.
22. Rashid Khan (Gujarat Titans) vs Kolkata Knight Riders (IPL 2023)
The latest incumbent on the list is Gujarat Titans’ Rashid Khan who claimed his first IPL hat-trick. He also became the player with the most hat tricks in T20 cricket. Russell, Narine, and Thakur were the three KKR batters who fell to Rashid’s spin masterclass in the episode of the IPL 2023 season.
