Bangladesh have refused to travel to India for T20 World Cup 2026.
Bangladesh Cricket Team’s participation in ICC T20 World Cup 2026 has become the biggest off-field controversy at the moment. Moreover, they are yet to confirm their participation in the tournament, which will commence on February 7.
On Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) instructions, Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman was released from Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) squad ahead of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The governing body took the step after Indian fans slammed KKR for picking the left-arm pacer in their squad despite growing violence against Indian communities in Bangladesh.
However, the move put BCCI at loggerheads with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The latter banned the telecast and promotion of IPL 2026 in their country with immediate effect. Moreover, they also refused to travel to India for the T20 World Cup, citing security issues for their players.
BCB made an official appeal to the International Cricket Council (ICC) to relocate their matches to Sri Lanka. After a series of discussions between ICC and BCB, the former eventually denied their request. In a video meeting on January 23, ICC refused to make last-minute changes to the schedule and asked Bangladesh to play their games in India.
A voting process was conducted on Bangladesh’s request and 15 ICC members out of 16 voted against their demand. They favoured replacing Bangladesh with a different team. Hence, ICC gave a 24-hour deadline to Bangladesh to confirm their participation in the World Cup.
However, Bangladesh Government has denied permission to their players to travel to India. Also, BCB has not given a confirmation to ICC about their participation in the tournament. In such a scenario, they are highly likely to be ruled out of the campaign and get replaced by Scotland.
Bangladesh to lose INR 240 crore if they do not participate in T20 World Cup

Notably, if Bangladesh do not participate in ICC T20 World Cup 2026, they are going to lose 27 million dollars or INR 240 crore. If that happens, they will breach the ICC’s participation clause, and will lose a chunk of ICC’s revenue share, which is 4.47%.
Additionally, the BCB will also lose out on the participation money and their share of the prize money. Their non-participation will also affect broadcasting partner T Sports, which has bought the rights to telecast the tournament in Bangladesh. The network group is expected to lose BDT 200 crore.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh are placed in Group C in T20 World Cup and will play their first three matches at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Their last group stage clash will be played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
