Rishabh Pant got out for a duck on LSG captaincy debut and lost the game to DC by 1 wicket.

Following Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) unexpected loss in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 opener to the Delhi Capitals (DC), Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of the franchise, was spotted having a heated discussion with captain Rishabh Pant. As fans were reminded of a similar incident from the previous season, the animated exchange swiftly went viral on social media.

The fourth match of IPL 2025 saw LSG lose shockingly to DC on Monday, March 24, at the Dr. YSRR ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. The Capitals made an amazing comeback because LSG, who were in a dominant position, lost control of the game.

DC had won the toss and put LSG to bat first. Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran scored seventies each and David Miller’s 27* powered LSG to 209/8 in 20 overs. Rishabh Pant had fallen for a duck on his LSG captaincy debut.

In response, DC faltered badly in the chase, being reduced to 113/6 at one stage. But then Vipraj Nigam (39 in 15) and Ashutosh Sharma (66* in 31 balls) took DC to an amazing one-wicket win.

There were questions raised by LSG’s bowling strategy. The team’s most seasoned bowler, Shardul Thakur, claimed two wickets in his opening over. He was not allowed to bowl another over, though. When DC required 22 from the final two overs, captain Pant gave the ball to the rookie Prince Yadav.

At the mega auction, Pant was acquired by LSG for an unprecedented ₹27 crores. In IPL history, he became the costliest player. As a hitter and captain, Pant had a lackluster debut. In a game where more than 420 runs were scored and five batters had strike rates above 200, he was removed for a six-ball duck.

Sanjiv Goenka chatted with coach Justin Langer and Rishabh Pant following the loss. Notably, following a humiliating loss to SRH in 2024, Goenka had a heated argument with then-captain KL Rahul. Rahul’s eventual departure from the franchise was reportedly influenced by that altercation.

Rishabh Pant admitted that luck played a role in the game. He pointed out that there was a chance to complete the stumping had the ball not deflected off Mohit’s pads. However, Pant added that such moments are a part of cricket.

LSG will face SRH next at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on March 27 in IPL 2025.
