Major update on Shreyas Iyer's injury & return timeline

Shreyas Iyer suffered a spleen injury during the third ODI in Sydney between India and Australia.
The Indian cricket team will play their next ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11. The squad for the series has not been announced yet and is expected to be revealed in the first week of the year.
Most players, including those who regularly represent the national side, are currently participating in the Vijay Hazare Trophy to stay match-fit and prepared for the upcoming challenge.
However, India’s designated No. 4 batter in ODIs, Shreyas Iyer, is currently out of action due to injury. Iyer, who played a crucial role in India’s Champions Trophy triumph earlier this year, was last seen in action against Australia in October.
During that series, he suffered an abdominal injury, which ruled him out of the entire South Africa ODI series and the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. Iyer is pushing for an early return to cricket as he continues his recovery from injury.
Update on Shreyas Iyer’s Injury

The Times of India reported that the 31-year-old vice-captain of India’s ODI team, Shreyas Iyer, had his first batting session since the injury in Mumbai on 24 December and is now set to head to the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.
Iyer batted for nearly an hour and did not experience any pain or discomfort, which comes as a big relief for both the batter and the Indian team management. He is likely to spend four to six weeks at the CoE, where the medical and fitness staff will closely monitor his recovery and provide clarity on his return timeline.
Shreyas had already resumed gym workouts and fitness sessions, and all post-injury assessments have shown no alarming issues so far.
As things stand, there is no confirmed timeline for his return to competitive cricket. That said, the 31-year-old is keen to be back in action at the earliest and is strongly pushing for a comeback during the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025–26.
India will play an ODI series against New Zealand starting on January 11. While it remains difficult for Iyer to make the squad for the series, his comeback has not been completely ruled out.
