Major update on Shubman Gill's injury ahead of SL vs IND 1st Test

Shubman Gill picked up a finger injury in the training session ahead of the warm-up game.
India are preparing for the two-match Test series in Sri Lanka. This is the first time since 2017 that India are on a tour of Sri Lanka for a Test series. The Test series will kick off on August 15 with the first Test at Galle International Stadium.
India have not lost to Sri Lanka in tests since 2008. In the last six series, India have won five, and one was drawn in 2010. The Men in Blue are coming into this series on the back of a test series defeat against South Africa at home.
They have slipped down to fifth place in the points table of the ongoing World Test Championship 2025-27. Their qualification for the WTC final is very difficult, but a series win in Sri Lanka can improve their stats.
The three-day warm-up game against Sri Lanka XI is currently underway in Colombo. However, major news is emerging from the Indian camp ahead of the first Test, and it is not good for the team and their fans.
Shubman Gill sustained a finger injury in the training session
Indian Test captain Shubman Gill sustained a finger injury in the training camp. That has forced him to sit out from Day 1 of the ongoing three-match warm-up game against Sri Lanka XI.
The match is being played at Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground in Colombo. The match began with Sri Lanka XI winning the toss and electing to bat first. KL Rahul is leading the team in Gill’s absence.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the injury to the Indian captain. In a statement released, the BCCI said that Gill picked up an injury to his right ring finger while practising on Thursday.
As a result, Gill is not available on the field for precautionary reasons. The BCCI medical team is observing the Indian captain. It is a big injury scare for Team India, because Gill has been India’s leading scorer across formats since 2025.
Gill’s presence will strengthen India as the visitors are already without Jasprit Bumrah due to injury. India have added Auqib Nabi to the squad to replace Bumrah. The two tests will be held in Galle and Colombo, respectively.
When will the first test between Sri Lanka and India take place?
The first test will start on August 15 at Galle International Stadium.
