Marcus Stoinis represented Australia in 71 ODI matches.
Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis announced his retirement from ODI cricket on Thursday, February 6. Stoinis has decided to pull the curtains on his 10-year-long ODI career that saw him represent Australia on 71 occasions in the 50-over cricket.
Stoinis’ retirement has added to Australia’s problems ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where they are placed in Group B with England, South Africa, and Afghanistan.
The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 winners will be without all-rounder Mitchell Marsh in the Champions Trophy due to a back injury. Furthermore, captain Pat Cummins and pacer Josh Hazlewood also have been ruled out because of their respective injuries.
Stoinis’ retirement means Australia will have to make four changes to their provisional ICC Champions Trophy squad. They will start their campaign against England in Lahore on February 22.

Announcing his sudden retirement, Stoinis expressed gratitude for the chance to represent his country in ODIs.
Stoinis said, “Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold. Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish.“
He added that it was not an easy decision, but he felt it was the right time to shift his focus to other parts of his career.
He elaborated, “This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career. I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ron (Andrew McDonald) and I’ve hugely appreciated his support.”
Stoinis scored 1,495 runs at an average of 26 and took 48 wickets at an average of 43 in his ODI career. He was also part of the Australian squad that won the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in India.
His last appearance in the ODIs came against Pakistan at Perth in 2024.
