England’s chief selector, Luke Wright, provided a massive fitness update about premier pacer Mark Wood ahead of the test series against the Indian Cricket Team. He said that the fast bowler has started bowling, and they are hopeful of having him for the fourth or fifth test.
England pacer Mark Wood has been out of the cricketing action for a while. The fast bowler underwent a knee surgery after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which was played in February-March this year, and was ruled out of the game for four months.
Mark Wood was decent with the ball in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The fast bowler picked just one wicket in two matches as England got knocked out in the first round itself. The Three Lions failed to win a single game in the tournament.
With the test series against England around the corner, there has been a lot of speculation about whether Mark Wood will play in the series or not. The fast bowler has been putting in the hard yards and is giving everything to make his comeback but so far there seem to be to no clarity.
I think he’s more long-term, if we can get him back, he might have an option for the fourth or fifth test – Luke Wright on Mark Wood
Chief selector Luke Wright shared an update about Mark Wood, saying that the fast bowler is on the road to recovery. He admitted that the pacer has started bowling, which is a positive sign. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said:
“I think Woody’s now started bowling just lightly, to be honest. He’s just off a few paces, but that’s been a great sign. So, he’s on the road to recovery. I think he’s more long-term, if we can get him back, he might have an option for the fourth or fifth Test. But again, each day it’s ticking off each box and making sure he’s OK.”
If declared fit, Mark Wood will be playing a key role for England in the test series. He has picked 119 wickets at an average of 30.4 in the 37 tests. It remains to be seen if he will play a part in the last stage of the series or not.
Meanwhile, England’s squad for the first test against India was recently announced. The team will be captained by Ben Stokes and will see a return of Chris Woakes and Jamie Overton. Gus Atkinson and Jofra Archer have been ruled out of the match.
