Martin Guptill confirmed his retirement from international cricket on January 8, 2025.

New Zealand opener Martin Guptill announced his retirement from international cricket on January 8, 2025. The announcement confirmed the end of an entertaining career that had begun in 2009.

Guptill made his international debut for New Zealand in all three formats in 2009 and went on to become a key part of the white-ball team for a long timer. The 38-year-old played crucial roles in New Zealand’s success in ICC events from 2014 to 2021, where they reached the knockouts in several tournaments.

Over his career, he earned a reputation of being a tough competitor and a thrilling batsman to watch.

Martin Guptill’s international career in numbers

Martin Guptill represented New Zealand in 367 international games which consisted of 47 tests, 198 ODIs and 122 T20Is. Guptill was well known in the New Zealand circuit for dominating the bowlers with his aggressive batting style from the onset of the innings.

In ODIs, he scored 7,346 runs at an average of 41.73. He also impressed in T20Is, scoring 3,531 runs with a strike rate of 136. He finished as New Zealand[‘s leading T20I run-scorer and the third-leading ODI run-scorer.

However, his test numbers didn’t quite reflect his talent: 2,586 runs at an average of 29.

The most remarkable moment of Martin Guptill’s career came when he scored an unbeaten 237 runs in the quarter-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 against West Indies in Wellington. He remains the only Kiwi batsman to score a double century in ODI cricket.

Guptill’s batting numbers across format:

Test – 2586 runs in 89 innings at a batting average of 29.38

ODI – 7346 runs in 195 innings at a batting average of 41.73

T20I – 3531 runs in 118 innings at a batting average of 31.81.

Further, Guptill holds the record for the second most runs scored by boundaries (fours and sixes) in an ODI innings. In his 237-run knock against the West Indies, he scored 162 runs through boundaries, which is second to Rohit Sharma’s feat – the India opener scored 186 runs from boundaries out of 264 during his world-record knock against Sri Lanka in 2014.

Martin Guptill was the first New Zealand batsman to score a century on his ODI debut. He made 122 against West Indies in Auckland in 2009 in his maiden ODI outing. Rob Nicol joined him on the list when he scored 108* on his debut against Zimbabwe in 2011.
